On start up, hit F8 for Safe Mode - remove Vista.

Otehrwise, take it to a repair shop.

Well, in 3 hours, it was the only reply you got - and I don't see people queueing up to help now either.

My reply was brief and to the point - if you wanted more, you could try typing proper sentences and providing more information e.g. make/model of Drive, how much RAM etc etc.

What O/S did you have on the Laptop previously? How much RAM is on-board? How old is laptop? Vista is not a good O/S.

it had vista previously and the hard drive broke so i got a new hard drive and installed vista on it.When i was installing the os on the new hard drive the laptop would keep shutting down on me!! just cutting off like so i removed a gig of ram and it worked fine so when it finished installing and updating i put the ram back and the laptop worked fine.I done a mem test using memtest86 and the ram is fine! does anyone know why this happened im curious more than anything?

compaq presario cq60 with vista and 3 gig ram...

    Thanks for replies.

Is it working now? Or is it still shutting down?

I put XP onto a HP G60 (very similar I beleive) a while back, and defluffed it (needs complete disassembly). It still gets hot and shuts down if used in a warm room. The graphics chip cooling is poorly designed on these, there are copper shims you can get on ebay for a couple of bucks to replace the pad between the GFX chip and the heat sink which will improve matters.

Look for CoreTemp and GPU-Z to monitor temp of cpu and GFX chip.

Try Cleaning both sticks of Ram with Alcohol (Pure) - You can pick it up at a hardware store, or a Chemist.
