I haven't stayed in either, but as far as location goes you should bear in mind that the Royal Marine is smack bang in the middle of Dun Laoghaire and within walking distance to the sea, shops, restaurants etc.

Castleknock Hotel is somewhat isolated and would require a car IMHO.

Yep. I agree. I'd go with Dun Laoghaire. I have never stayed in either hotel, but I do know both areas pretty well. There is not much sightseeing to do in Castleknock unless you want to use it as a base for exploring the Phoenix Park which is near by. You could go to Dublin Zoo, or go see Farmleigh House, or go see the Aras (which does need to be prebooked well in advance) or go see the deer. You'd still need a car to do all that though. The Park is very big.

There is a lot more to see and do in Dun Laoghaire that is right on your doorstep, as is the sea front and the piers. The DART is near by, so you can jump on that and explore the nearby coastal villages of Monkstown, Sandycove, Glasthule or Dalkey. The Vico Rd area in near by Killiney has some spectacular scenery and a lovely cliff walk down to the beach.

Castleknock is a lovely hotel.... I haven't stayed in the Royal Marine, but there would be a lot more to do in Dun Laoighre.
