    hi all i just got my first diesel it a 01 ford focus 1.8 tdci i been driving it for bout 3 months now its gone dead in power since i got it and the water pump is a bit noisey timing belt was changed at 71k theres 100k on it now would i need to change timing belt aswell. i was told it could be the intercooler can anyone help as im new to diesel thanks

    If the w/pump wasn't changed when the t/belt was, that could be the noisy problem. What about the alt belt?

    its a grinding sound down at the drivers side getting worse

    Am I the only one who is struggling to make sense of the OP?

    Seems to be two issues here jumbled up into one post.

    Issue 1. Noisy water pump, OP asks should the timing belt be changed as well.

    No need. The water pump is driven off the auxiliary belt and therefore is not usually changed as part of the timing belt job. If the water pump is noisy (which does happen to them) then just change it and leave the timing belt alone. A new auxiliary drive belt might be a good idea depending on the condition of the existing one.


    Issue 2. Lack of power. OP asks is it the intercooler.

    It could be. However none of us can tell you for sure as it is impossible to diagnose a car via the internet. Maybe the best approach is to ask the garage to check out the lack of power while the car is in having the water pump changed.
