My computer got a nasty trojan virus and as I can't afford to give it into a professional company I've given it to my housemate's friend who fixed her computer when she had a similar problem. I'm going to pay him for the work but not sure how much to give?

Thanks for any help with this

Get intel from the friend first, find out what he drinks, not everyone has a taste for wine. A six pack of his favourite tipple would be a nice thank you.

If the friend doesn't drink your screwed;) As said, find out from your housemate what would be greatly recieved, be it drink, vouchers or cash in hand etc. etc.

Around €20/30 especially if its how he makes a living, if you cannot afford that give whatever you can afford, if he took in on with that understanding I wouldn't see it being an issue. I usually charge €30 for virus removal, especially as some can take a fair while to remove, and I also update all software/Windows etc which takes a while (its commonly out of date software that causes the virus to get in in the first place).

Thanks for all the replies, he does it for nixers and my housemate was saying that I will have to pay him. I was thinking along the lines of what Nick was saying €30 sounds good, I just really wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be stingy as I'm not sure the work involved in removing these awful viruses.

€30 for that is quite reasonable I think, I usually charge 50-80 for os re-install, it all depends how long it takes. As some laptops are dog slow, some take much longer in removing viruses than quick ones, same goes for desktops.

30 is reasonable as nick says. What I will say is that in my case if I get cash it usually goes into the family pot and I buy essentials. If I get a present such as wine I don't feel guilty drinking it ;)

if you have tried to remove it yourself with Malwarebytes or Superantispyware or a rootkit removal tool such as combofix then its time to hand it to him as it is most likely something nasty which can take time to remove
It can even in some cases lead to a complete reinstall of the OS to remove it

if you're feeling brave, register an account on bleepingcomputer.com and post your problem, they will guide you through removing the trojan/malware.

other than that.. id say 30-50eur sounds about right depending on how difficult it is to clean.
