I'm going to get some spd's instead of pedals/cages in the near future. But loads of the cycling shoes are fugly and I can't afford a pair of these beauts

So I'm just wondering if anyone has done it before/ know someone who'd do it for you and have any tips for doing it?

Haven't tried it, but when I bought a spare set of cleats, they came with a plate, suggesting you could do this if you were clever. You'd need something with a deep enough sole that the cleats remained recessed for walking, and enough space around the cleat that connecting section of the pedal still had room to work. Could be challenging to make something comfortable and practical.

my old lidl shoes which fell apart a few weeks ago (after 5 years ) had a small metal plate your main problem would be the sole recess and a recess on the inside so the screws dont dig into your feet

I've seen it done with some Converse Hi-Tops before, not solid enough for going on proper spins but if you wanted to spin into town of an afternoon they were certainly good enough for that.

I had an old pair of Vans spd's, when they gave up the ghost I dissected them and pulled out the solid sole part. I reckon that could be put into any pair of trainers.

Chrome and DZR also do some, you're looking at between €80 and €100 depending on the model.

@Crow92, I was keen on those Dromartis until I Googled for a few unofficial "here I am in my shoes" photos. They look awful IMO.

I have some Converse-ish-styled SPD shoes and tbh they're pretty awful as either walking or cycling shoes. The soles are very thick but they're oddly floppy to ride in.

edit: the ones I have are DZR GMT-8 (link to where I ordered them from).

This crowd do a casual type spd shoe. Chainreaction used to stock them although they seem to have gone off their site.

Yea Looking online it seems like a transplant from an old shoe is the most common way of doing it. The chrome kursk don't look too bad I have to say. I'll keep that website in mind.

@Lumen, your right, they do look awful in real life. I may be as well to buy a pair of the chrome kursk's as I'd have to buy 2nd hand shoes to take apart anyways.

A proper cobbler might be a good bet to check.
