Going into second year in NUIG and I'm looking for a good gym for the yr. I'm only really interested in weight lifting so i've no interested in a gym full of cardio equipment and a small section for weights. Unfortunately that's exactly what the kingfisher at the college is like. Was hoping someone would know a good gym to try instead!

Im using the kingfisher nuig at the moment. It allows you to do everything really imo.

Not great, but it does the job.

have heard good things about Galway City Gym from people.

galway city gym but you may get tired of looking at fellas looking at themselves.olympic fitness is huge and is quiet so you would get your workout done without worrying about some guy waiting for you to finish your reps. good luck.

I use NRG in Bohermore, Its really handy as its close to college and its a lot quieter. they have a big weights area off the cardio section of the gym. They just moved their spin studio down stairs and have said they are waiting for more equipment to come now. Student rates are about the same as Kingfisher.

NRG in bohermore is teeny tiny. Very pokey and seriously limited in terms of available plates and weight denominations. At least that's what I found when i was there a few months back.

Plus it's around a 3 minute walk to galway city gym up the road.
City Gym is not just a bodybuilders gym, i know plenty of people who maintain a relatively comfortable level of fitness and cardio by training in there. You get what you want from your workout and city gym has the equipment to take yourself further if that's what you want.

Nothing worse than really wanting a piece of equipment but not having it available to you :'(

Hey all just to hi-jack this thread.... :)

I'm in a similar situation to the OP. Only i live in Spiddal and it seems Galway City Gym is one of the furthest away... kind of the wrong side of the city for me to be getting to x3 a week. So my question is what takes second place to Galway City Gym for weight lifting?

It would have to include the following: dumb bells >30kg, a pull up station, squat rack and/or smith machine. Last gym I joined had feck all. Not even a bar bell so anything will be a step up. I'm not too interested in a pool although it would be a bonus.

If no such gym exists i guess i'll just have to go with GCG but as i would be going at 6:30pm after work i'd imagine it would be crazy crowded?

Has anyone any experience with NRG in Knocknacarra? From the website it looks like mostly cardio machines.. can any one verify?

And lastly when looking for proof of student will a card suffice or do most look for a letter from the college (my last gym did)

    Thanks for reading.

I live in Furbo and find NRG Knocknacarra great cos I never hit any traffic coming in and out. Also they have just updated their free weights room which has a wide range of equipment(included all the equipment you mentioned) and is completely seperate to their cardio room. I defo think its worth a look at and think they offer student memberships but unsure what the price is but I find it great value for what they offer. Will be a lot closer for you than GCG.

    Is peak physique Leisureland?

Sorry got mixed up with Leisure World. It's on the Headford road right? Wrong side of town for me but might check it out for the craic.

Anyone been to Leisureland gym? How does that compare to the rest. For weightlifting that is.

Swiftman what did they look for as proof for the student discount? My student card doesn't have any exp dates on it. Would it suffice?

Does it have a powerrack or squat rack swiftman? I'm not really a fan of leg presses, more of a fan of squatting/lunges with a barbell for legs
