Thanks all for the unexpected runner-upitude - love trooney's pyrotechnics and would love to know how it's done.

My own humble "weather shot" was made on the iPhone, I was kicking myself not to have brought a better camera, but I guess the iPhone was better than nowt ...

You know the old saying Hugh, the best camera in the world is the one you have with you.

It's done with steel wool, stuffed into a hand whisk, tied to a long string/light rope. Light the steel wool and spin the whisk. I'd advise you wear heavy, old clothes, a hat and some (safety) glasses otherwise you may get burnt :(

As Adrian says, that’s how it’s done. As far as taking shots of it, I think trying to get yourself into a position that you might not normally see done would be best. I would've liked to lie on the ground at the feet of Jonnie and get a 'looking upwards' shot. Next time maybe. The other thing to watch out for is the flying sparks, as obvious as that might sound. They do go everywhere, so synthetic clothing prob not to be recommended if you want to get close to the action. The element of danger adds to the experience too though!

Watch out the steel wool will do nasty things to the front element of a lens

Well done on the potw, great shots all round
