I'll be servicing my own car next time around and spotted this in my travels, is it as good an idea as it looks, or is there a catch I haven't spotted?

They work fine, make sure it matches the volume of oil coming out.

You can still get drips over the edge so id put some old carpet under neath.

Get an old oil container, cut hole with stanley.
Pour waste oil into freshly emptied container once you are finished.
Cheaper and you don't have to worry about drips, overspill.
(comment about capacities/volume applies here too)

    Hey,

Be carefull with that one...the oil comes out, hits the tray, and ramps the edges quite well. The place will end up covered in oil.

Halfrauds have a better one for less than €10. I cant find it on the website, but I kow they have them in the shop. They have a tilt on them so the oil runs down into the hole, and doesnt ramp the sides so badly!

    This is true.

Also, on the halfords one make sure that the hole is "downstream" of the oil flow, otherwise oil goes everywhere...again.

Also you need to make sure that it will fit under your car (enough ground clearance).

Helped a friend service his classic mini once and he bought one of these things specially for the job. I got a good laugh when it didn't fit under. :D

I got me one of these big plastic pans somewhere, maybe a factors or something.

    Cheap and does the job.

Before the oil change, save empty 2 litre milk jugs a few days and just pour the old oil into them. Take to recycling plant.

As previous posters have said, this will probably end up in oil spraying off and heading all over your driveway. I think a wider shallow tray is better to catch the oil initially, then you can transfer it into something like this to dispose of.

    What biko said.

I don't think the purpose of these yokes is to eliminate raising the car as required tbh.

Well an oil 5l oil container with the side cut out still fitted perfectly and came free with oil in it ;)
