Why do employers rarely state what they will pay?

Its a demoralising, demeaning and stupid practise. Why the hell can't they just state what they are willing to pay (If not a precise figure, at least a ballpark one) in job adds? Its driving me bonkers.

This also annoys me I really don't see why they do it. There is one thing which is worse IMO.

Companies who ask you to state your salary expectations as part of the application process. So, not only do they emit you how much they will pay, they hope that the figure you quote is way below what they are willing to pay, so they can pay you your figure and keep you happy. And worse is if you quote a figure over what they are willing to pay you are crossed off the potential candidate list straight away.
    It Drives me nuts

Every person should be part of a network and be able to discuss their pay and compare it with others. If you are low down in the pay stakes then you should be able to move to another job to get more.

High unemployment makes this hard which is why unemployment affects everybody in society, not just the unemployed and their families but all the employed who are denied a chance to get a decent wage for their efforts or a decent chance to advance and improve themselves.

Of course people tend to exaggerate their earnings so try to get reliable sources for your wage info.

i think it is done by employers so as not to put off highly skilled workers from applying and gives the company room to negotiate if they get a really good applicant whereby they can go above what they were originally offering.

So for example they state 26k to 30k as their salary range. Applicants who think they are worth more than 30k will be unlikely to apply. Its a frustrating practice i agree!

why would you want to waste time with a company that doesn't have the budget to meet your expectations?

Why would a company waste their time with someone who they cannot afford to pay?

    it's just another filter.

Perhaps it might be internal matter as well. If existing company employees see that the role is being advertised for X wages and they are getting less than that, this could make interesting end of year meetings?

    Its just poker

They are trying to get the best person at the least money

They are offering the job, that presumably you want. So you have to state a salary expectation and justify it. I dont have a problem with that
