Chamber Adapters

This has probably been asked dozens of times before but here goes.

Is it legal in Ireland to have these chamber adapters? I would like an adapter for my 20bore which I could then fire .410. They even do ones from 20bore to 22lr.

The only problem I can see is with the ammo, not being legally able to hold ammo for a firearm you're not licensed for. Can you get permission from the guards to hold different ammo for which technically you don't have a licence for?

No doubt there will be a myriad of issues knowing the Irish firearm licensing system.

You can't have them here. I'm sure someone else is going to say you can if you licence it as a firearm. But in my opinion you can't as the oal of the chamber adapter would mean that it would have to be licenced as a short arm. Even if technically you could licence the .22 version i doubt the gards would approve and they are rubbish anyway.

You can use it if it is a 22lr into a 22 magnum.Or if you had a liscense say for a .22 and a 20 ga or whatever.Thats your problem of the different ammo firearm dealt with.TBH there are two different types ,there inserts and adapters.
The inserts are like a minature barrel appx 6/8ins of the sub calibre that you put in the main calibre chamber[IE a 9mm in 12ga] they are rifled so they are pretty accurate within their limits.Basically they are designed for getting more work out of obscure calibres , which is a rather unlikely phenomen around here,by allowing them to fire more commonly available ammo.

The adapters are really sleeves that just grip the smaller shell and allow it to fit into the bigger chamber.IE 22lr in 22magnum.They rely on the rifling [more or less ] to spin the bullet for some accruacy. They work within reason. You are not going to get tack driving accruacy out of them, but for busting bunnies or zeroing a scope in 22lr , or humane dispatch, without blowing your trapped critter apart with a shotgun blast, they are fine.
TBH the smaller cals are very fiddley to reload and pick out a spent shell in they 22lr sizes, and work best in a break action gun. They can cause feeding probs in some other actions, will not work in pumps or semi shotguns or rifles and I would recommend eye protection with them as somtimes the smaller 22 case can rupture and spark back out of the breech /firing pin hole.

One thing they do remarkably well is silence the round in a bigger firearm.
A CCI stinger fired in my Savage 22 mag /20 GA,sounds almost like a sub sonic round.

Back in the day, and in another jurisdiction, I had a Parker Hale adaptor to fire .410 in a 12 guage and it was very useful for close range work. I've also used the 6.5mm subcaliber in the 84mm Carl Gustaf but that is a different ballgame alltogether :D
