Cost of replacing a clutch?

Hey just looking for advice. Recently the clutch went in my 05 Colt. The mechanic who fixed it for me who said he rang around to try and get a better price for the clutch, quoted me at 570 labour+clutch.

    Was that a good price?

Also with clutches, if there was something up with it should a mechanic be able to spot that? I ask because only around a month and a half ago the car was brought in for a service. (different garage) and they charged me 600 quid, yet here I am 2 months later and ive to fork out another 600 almost.

Is it something that could be spotted or is it just a case of it goes without warning?

I wouldn't know if you got a good price on the clutch or not but I'm thinking you got other work done besides the service for 600 euro. Any time I've had to replace a clutch it would have been slipping for a while but I'm not a mechanic so maybe they can go without warning too.
