Firstly, mods, I'd say this may not be the correct location for the thread but I couldn't see a relevant location in the Edu section, also hopefully some folks will see it here and maybe they'll give it a shot.

I read about this a while back but it seems M.I.T. and Harvard Universities are in the process of offering some of their courses free online, from what I understand you don't get a degree but if you pay a fee you will receive official accreditation but I'm not 100% on that.

Looks like the course options are very limited at the moment but they are slowly releasing more courses, hopefully it would be a good way for folk here to motivate and educate themselves, and sure it's free so it's not like you're down thousands of Euro :)

Anyway, the site is https://www.edx.org/courses hopefully it's of use to someone here.

Fair enough, I can imagine that it's fairly difficult to motivate yerself to get stuck in, I know what I'm like, if I've something to do and I stick on the kettle, whatever was meant to be done suddenly becomes tomorrow's work :)

Sure I'll give the course a try, I'll let ye all know either way, haha sure the slagging I get may make it in to the legendary boards thread :D

On the computer science one at Harvard, some of the lecturers are really young and cute! Why can't they make them like that in Ireland!! Think I'll sign up too.

You should probably check if a web cam is a prerequisite for the course.

If you have the discipline, there's a huge amount of resources online through e-learning.

You only have to look here: http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses

There's another similar site with a lot more options and similar universities called Class Central

I did that last time it was available...its not easy by any stretch of the imagination. If your already committed to a course irl, be prepared to make plenty of time available.

    Btw, coursera.org

I signed up for Computer Science. I'd love to see health science or cryptology, but can't see them on the page??

This is really interesting..... I've never done e-learning before. I'd love to hear some opinions on what it's like and how much you actually learn....

Me neither. It is the equivalent to having a course book where you know that at the back there is a section on sexy birds having sex.

I signed up for the Harvard computer science course. You do get a certificate at the end so at least there is some kind of qualification involved. I am lucky enough to have gotten my foot in the door with a giant web company already without qualifications so this will be a great to have, a nice cert from a renowned school basically proving I have knowledge. It will also be able to test me, I'd love to do a degree part time in the evenings however I'm not sure if I can commit. I reckon if I can stick with this then I'll know whether or not I'd be able to commit to a four year program.

This is pretty interesting, thanks for the link OP!

One thing, there is not too many details on the courses on the site, is there any more details on each course and what it intails? Just a couple of details to the right on each course.

Has anyone done one of these, from this website, before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,029 ✭✭✭SusieBlue

I've just signed up for a few, thanks so much to everyone for posting the links.

I understand that there is no qualification at the end, but what do you get? An email confirming you did the course? A cert? Or nothing? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭Pdfile

signed up, hopefully i can get a fetac lvl 3 outta this.

I came across that site a few months ago, it sounds great. So many e learning courses charge ridiculous fees so for anybody with time on their hands and not much money, which is half the country at the moment, that is the way to go.
