I have a car at home i use for farming just up the fields and that. the fan belt came off 3 weeks ago and its starting to go now again so its obviously stretched or something. so i was just wondering how do i go about putting a new one on and what tools do i need. its not that it is expensive for the mechanic to come down its just i wanna know how to do it and the car is worth less than the jumper i am wearing at the moment.

    Hey,

Sounds like the tensioner might be too loose here.

If it is the same as the 206, the tensioner is held in place by a round bolt, with a size 45 torx bolt. It looks different to the other pulleys, it is smaller and the bolt in the middle is round and sticks out a small bit.

Loosen the bolt in the tensioner JUST enough to allow you to twist it upwards (using the torx 45 bit, pain in the ass to get a ratchet in there though because it is so tight for space). twist the tensioner with a vice grips on the bigger (size 26+) bolt on the tensioner turning it anti-clockwise until the belt comes off.

To refit, put the belt back on the pulleys the way they came off, leaving the tensioner last. Slip it onto the tensioner making sure the ribbed belt is sitting in the middle of all the pulleys.

Using the vice grips on the big bolt again twist it clockwise until the belt is tight. I usually tighten it so that you can twist the belt almost 90 degrees on the longest straight stretch. Then tighten the torx tensioner bolt, and the job is done. You will have to use the correct torx attachment here, if you tighten it with a vice it will just slip off again.

it is a bit fiddley to tighten the tensioner nut while holding the vicegrips at the same time. If you tighten the tensioner nut (torx)slightly FIRST, then turn the big bolt with the vice-grips, it helps to hold it in the correct tension position while you tighten the nut the rest.

    Ken

The setup on the 406 is way different than the 206. There will be an auto tensioner and an idler pulley which is used to tension the belt. Explaining it here is not the easiest. A Haynes manual will explain better and with pics!
