    hi - Have just picked up 2 2 penalty points for speeding and was wondering whether it makes a difference to your insurance renewal premium whether the points are on the principal policy holders license versus a named driver (e.g wife)
    Thanks

    Depends on the ins co. Generally no, but it does with Aviva. Either way, you have to tell them.

    Thanks, I am with Avia ;) Any idea with the difference would be?

    Best way to find out is to get online quotes and do the changes there, should give an indication there?

    By moving the points between principal policy holder and named driver do you mean swapping yourself and the wife around as principal policy holder?

    One more thing, as far as I can remember with aviva 0 points is 20% discount and 2 points 10%. 4 points is their baseline.

    Most of the insurance companies now document in the policy document what threshold of points must be notified and when they require to be notified. Where notification is required, they usually demand that you tell them immediately, not at the next renewal.

    For example, Axa says that

    You must tell us immediately about any:
    • change of car or any other vehicle you buy or take ownership of;
    • convictions, prosecutions or any penalty points which apply to you or any other driver of your car;
    • change in the driver’s health, address or job;
    • modifications or alterations to your vehicle including, but not limited to, air induction kits and filters, lower suspension, change to the exhaust, engine maintenance computers or adding of body parts;
    • change in use or in the main user; or
    • other important change.

    OP, I see you are with Aviva, they impose an excess of €2,500 on any claim if there are points that you haven't notified to them affecting any driver on the policy....

    Special claims excess where you do not tell us about penalty points

    It is a condition of this policy that you let us know if any driver under this policy has received penalty points on his or her licence.

    If you do not keep to this condition, you will have to pay a policy excess of e2,500 as well as any existing policy excess. This means that we may not
    pay for at least the first e2,500 of any claim.

    If we have to deal with a claim from a third party, we may want to recover the first e2,500 from you.

    On this, I know my policy with Aviva the excess goes to €2,500 if I don't declare penalty points so informing them immediately is the thing to do.

    Correct, I was adding that to my post above while you were typing yours.

    I'm just after getting two penalty points and I'm with axa, I called them up and told them, and they said it won't effect me at all, so don't worry yourself :)

    I'd get that in writing if I could.

    AFAIR Aviva offered 10% discount for less than 2 penalty points, and 5% discount for less than 4 penalty points.

    If that still applies, your 2 penalty points would mean going down from 10% discount to 5% discount on your policy, so that actually might affect your premium.

    It doesn't affect the actual premium but the discount.

    Crafty buggers.

    Hi Guys

    if at inception/renewal of AVIVA policy it will tell you your money value for penalty discount - ie €100 - on calling them to update expect to pay that discount on that call.....fail to disclose the PP will result in €2500 excess in result of claim

    Does anyone know if the discount applied for no penalty points is lost if either the primary or named driver receives the points or is it just for the primary policy holder? Thanks
