I'm changing my car and really like the look of 06 BMW 3/5 series. Not mad about the Audi A4 but it's probably more in my price range. Like C series Merc. too.
    Any recommendations????
I currently drive about 10-12k miles annually but will be moer when I change the car. Looking for diesel, 2ltr. & preferably automatic.
What are the best sites to look at for ideas??

audi A6 would be a great car and they are 2.0 litre diesel. they can be very expensive but if you shop around you will get a good deal as the demand is no longer that high for these cars due to higher tax. have a look you could be surprised on what deal you could get on an A6

They can be very expensive if something goes wrong in them too, and they're not that reliable from what I've heard

not an auto and i am sure it would be cheaper private, but you wont get a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty in a private sale,i drove this the other day it is lovely, prob not what you are looking for but a good idea price/warranty/wise. i am sure if you waved 10k under his nose he would take it, i have bought 3 cars from that garage in the past and always pleasure to deal with.

    Thanks for those.
I had a look & prefer the A6 to the A4 but I think If I'm honest, I prefer the "look" of the BMW!!
I emailed one I saw on C*G & got an email back saying the owner lives in Hungary - for work & if I put the money in an account + cost of shipping, it will be delivered to my door - it's a 5 series for 8k!! I'm waiting for the bank to open lol!!
I don't know much about the BMW..are they reliable etc.??

If you are not big in to cars the best thing to do is just buy from a BMW garage as you will get a warranty and if anything goes wrong you have a come back. Where as if you buy private you are always talking a risk no matter how much you know about cars. the 3 series above in the Bmw garage is a nice car and would probably be bought for 10k. As you just seen yourself there is so many scams out there. if you can afford it just buy of a garage.

What a ridiculous waste of money. 11 grand for a 6 year old car with as basic a spec and engine as you can get.

At the end of the day its in a Bmw garage with a warranty it was going to be a bargain. Unfortunately you will always pay for the badge. I'm sure you would buy this car for less privately but you have no warranty and they are not the cheapest cars to repair and buy parts for specially if you are going to use bmw genuine parts. If the op was looking for a bargain they would not be looking at audi and Bmw's.

Waiting on the bank to open was a joke!!! I couldn't find anywhere on the site to report it. I guess it's true - if it seems too good to be true....
I was looking up the usual car sales sites for an indication of prices before I go look. I guess there is some comeback with a garage.

If the tax system stays as unbalanced as it is im gonna be switching to a 535d in 2 years time

Why not just buy a 520i or A6 2.0TFSI? Your only doing a couple of thousand a year, no need for a diesel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭therealme

I get the point re the badge - but they are genuinely the only 2 cars that stand out for me. I'm in a position at the moment where I can afford 1 so I'm going with it. Life is short - am not driving something I don't like - regardless of the year.

*Excuse the rant, it's not directed at you per se, more the "Oh, a shiny BMW, TAKE ALL MY MONEY NOW" crowd*[/QUOTE]

I can understand where you are coming from i wouldn't give that money for the car but i have no interest in Bmw's id be going for audi all the way. I suppose the best thing to do is look privately but do a cartell check and get a good mechanic to look it over before you part with your money. you will get a way better deal buying privately just be cautious and don't impulse buy which can be easier said than done when you are there and love a car you are viewing.

It's too much of an "old mans car"!!! Sorry!!
Late 20's girl's image to be considered too lol!!!
    Thanks tho :)

Fair enough but I really cannot see how a C Class Merc is any less an old man's car than the X-Type.

exactly, you are the one that is driving it so you know what you want, i only put the link up cos even if it is basic spec it is still a quality car, i have had a few different cars, but the bmw always makes me feel good when i am driving it,and the warranty is worth a lot more than the paper it is written on,check out the warranty BMW are offering, they are expensive but they do any work to a very high & efficient standard, and 2 years unlimited mileage with nct gaurantee is a big plus in my book. its not (the warranty) like some bloke selling cars from a pop up lot giving you a verbal "everythings covered"

Bazz26 - you are right!! (Thanks for taking the time to put up the link). I could see myself drive the Merc. over the Jag. I'm 100% decided - it has to be a BMW. Prob just a girl thing because I like how it looks :o

Readytosnap, think it will be a garage buy - private sales cheaper but I'd hope to have some comeback if it was ever needed.

little confused on how do you organise for your mechanic to look at several cars to check them over when some cars which may be out of the county etc. does the mechanic go with ya or bring car to him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Just remember, while you get a comprehensive 2 year warranty from the BMW dealer, the cost of that warranty is factored into the BMW dealer's selling price. If you are happy to pay extra for that peace of mind then it's the way to go.

The best thing to do is narrow it down and which ever car you want to buy then bring the mechanic you would not bring him to look at every car so look at them first yourself then if you like the car bring the mechanic for second viewing. He would have to go with you as there is no way that you can bring the car to him

so you must arrange sometime that suits the mechanic and the car owner, will the mechanic usually charge much for this. Bought a car in Dublin, i'm from cork, checked it all myself, was a 08, perfect condition, but a few months later i had the fear of god for no reason, what would i do if i bought a dodgy car, i am no expert. didn't ask mechanic to travel several hours to dublin, probably wouldn't want to do it anyway unless he got paid very well for it. i know money would be worth it if he found a serious problem. just lucky the owner was genuine and told me the cars history.:)

you wont have the bring a mechanic to a main dealer will you? so money saved there to put towards the extra premium of buying from a dealer

some people can't afford brand new cars maybe ones 3/4/5 yrs old, but i get what you are saying.

I'm a bit of a girl when it comes to cars (NO offence to any women!!!)
I know what I like but in terms of it's working order, I honestly havn't a clue! I don't know to trust a mechanic to look at it or go for a garage - pay extra & have a warranty.
After seeing scams on C*G, I find it hard to trust buying private - at the same time, not all dealers are genuine either. 10k is too much to spend on something that isn't going to drive well.

Forget about websites and the opinions of others for the moment - you need to get out there and drive as broad a selection of cars as possible. You'll probably be surprised at what you do and don't like about different makes/models, and you'll have more information to help others help you here.

True. Just need to find time & will do. Was really looking to see if people thought the BMW was a good car to buy & if any models are better than others.

    They're both owner-specific questions. ;)

Op how many miles will you be doing per year roughly with this new car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭therealme

At the moment, I drive about 10-12k annually, it will be more when I change - will use more on motorway etc. I have always had diesel cars.

Hi OP, would you think of a 2 door coupe? Am also a girl late 20s. Bought a new 320i BMW in 2008... lovely car and great drive. And its nice to look at... I spose ud need one a few years old tho for 10 K. Im selling mine shortly and trading it in for another... Baby on the way so now need 4 doors. So thinking of buying a 5 series BMW... Anyone think this is too much of a business mans car??? Or ok for a female late 20s...? Other option im looking at is Audi A7 (looks nice and sporty) but not sure as have never owned an Audi before... Or perhaps Audi A5 with 4 doors... Any opinions??
