I was just looking at the Ryanair website and their Dublin/Ireland routes, no route from Dub/anywhere else in Ireland to anywhere in Greece. Am I the only one or does anyone else find that strange?

Its very annoying alright, but they do fly from Stansted to lots of Greek destinations. Easy pop to Stansted and go on from there.

There isnt a market in Ireland for Greece, you cant fly from Belfast either, so as previous poster says its either going through the uk or trying to buy up a charter flight seat

Of course there is. On the holiday side of things alone, if there's a market for Spain & Portugal then Greece has to be a draw.

I'd say it's more to do with other reasons, perhaps flight time and fuel cost for a 4-5hr haul which is why LCC short haul carriers aren't keen on the route. That said, EI do run an Athens flight from Dublin so it's not completely inaccessible.

The big carriers also offer Athens fares to the Irish market, albeit with a connection involved somewhere.

Not too sure that the point about greece being a 4 hour flight holds up, as Ryanair fly to Lanzarote from Dublin and that is just over 4 hours (did it last year).

Yeah but Canaries are a huge pull for Irish holidaymakers, that's not to say the Greek Islands aren't popular but Ryanair only go where the money is and Lanzarote, Gran Canaria are perpetually safe bets for any airline and probably from anywhere in Northern Europe.

FR did have a presence in Kos and a few other Greek islands but, as per usual, pulled out in dispute over landing fees or some such. I think they have since returned, but I would not fully rely on Ryanair's hubs to see the world. If one wants to get to Greece, look beyond FR and it really is not that hard.

Lufthansa & Swiss often go for under €200rtn to Athens, 1 free bag and you even get fed!

I dont know if you are also looking for low-fare alternatives, but I did a dublin to malpensa with aerlingus / malpensa to mykonos with easyjet for pretty cheap.....biggest problem with that was a stopover was required on the way over :(

Budget says no holidays for JG :(

I was just browsing the Ryanair earlier on today, that's why I singled them out. I've been to Greece on another carrier, Monarch maybe? I forget.

I disagree there's no market in Ireland for Greek holidays. I've been to Crete and it's fabulous, especially the interior, have no time for Bar Street type places. San Torini (spelling?) is like paradise.

I've been to Spain, Alicante, and for me it's the worst holiday I was ever on.

Neither of those mean anything, but give people the choice and I reckon they'd go :)

    Directholidays go to Corfu ;)
Santorini is beautiful but difficult to get to now I think.

Go to Corfu 2nd week in September!! You can buy me a pint :D

There is a market for Greece and i've said to friends in the past that i'm amazed Michael O'Leary hasn't picked up on it.

I go to Zante a lot and have to go via UK unless find cheap charter flights, a lot of people i know over here go via Gatwick and fly to the Island on Easyjet, but would 100% fly with Ryanair if a route was laid on.

They could do 2 flights a week to Zante, Crete, Corfu & Rhodes, Just in the summer months, would surely turn a profit

Aer Lingus fly Dublin-Athens, why don't you just book with them?

Do you really think that Michael O'Leary hasnt looked into the Greek market ? of course he has, the route has been analysed to the hilt and the bottom line is that all the results come back that he cant fill the planes on a consistant basis. As other people say, fly AL to athens.

    Insider information or guesswork?

Do you think Ryanair don't know that Greece exists?

What's your reasoning behind why they don't fly there?

€171rtn to Athens with Swiss, so Greece is hardly unreachable from Ireland but you will need to remove the FR blinkers for a moment.

We can agree it's certainly based solely on commercial consideration. That MAY be due to passenger load factor, it MAY be due to squabbles with regional authorities on marketing budget or MAY be Michael's aversion to inveterate work practises at both ends. All conjecture - hence the reason I sought some detail as to the 'results' referenced in the post below. Either this information on the commercial viability of the route(s) is in the public domain or the poster has an inside track or it's guesswork.

If you read the thread you'd see I'm not looking to book anything with anyone.

On top of that you have to pay for your baggage, and it's not direct, it's a change at Zurich, then another plane from Athens to the island you want. Is it really worth it? Nah, much rather a direct flight

No you don't. No baggage fees with Swiss, being a real airline. FYI:

Anyway, seeing as nobody is trying to book anything this is fast turning into a pointless discussion.

A pointless discussion on a discussion board, surely not

I never asked for other options. I commented that it was strange that Ryanair don't fly from Ireland to Greece.

I agree. They should do something about that. I'm planing to go to Crete next year and the only way is to fly UK :(

Just book a package. It'll work out cheaper than going through the UK

Loads of direct flights to Crete from Dublin. They're all charters though
