Im wondering if anybody has read any good golf psychology books? Seem to be losing my head at one stage or another during the round and it has to be something in my head! For example im playing off 9 and last week in an open in druids heath i was 2 over through ten holes.. Scratched the next 3 and came home in -1 for the last 5 so i cant put it down to tiredness! Willing to try anything at this stage!

The misus brought me home 2 dr bob rotella books last week and they are well worth a read as far as I know he has 4 out and plan on getting the other 2.. I read golf is a game of confidence"and im half way through "putting out of your mind" at €12 a pop not bad price either.. Going out in the morning to put what I've read and taken on board into practice..

All you'll ever need to read regarding golf psychology IMO.

There is a lad called Jared Tendler who has masters degrees in golf psychology I think. I know this because he transferred his knowledge over to make a poker book which is very good. So I would advise trying to find his golf book.

Here are my basic psychological rules for golf:

    1. Understanding: Understanding the overall nature of golf, the dips in form, the high likelihood of error etc provides you with a platform from which to manage yourself emotionally on the course. Hitting very poor shots is part of the deal ... love it or leave it.
    2. Awareness: Be mindful of the psychological aspect from the start of the round. Don't just be come aware of it when you're losing it. Just as you might stretch before a round, do some psychological stretching. Basic rule for me - commit to try to talk to yourself supportively through the round, the way you would to a mate going through a rough time on the course or who just hit a bad shot. (You certainly wouldn't watch him duff/thin/top/slice/shank a shot and then chime in with "you f***ing CLOWN!" and berate him on the way to the green).
    3. Control: Take control of your behaviour. Awareness helps here obviously but the next step is to actively put effort into not swearing or acting out (dropping clubs, hitting bags etc). Tour pros are superb at psychological control most of the time. Given their skill set and what they expect from themselves I am amazed at their calm reactions to poor shots like duffed or thinned chips or poor drives. lot to be learned from their on course behaviour (I know there are many examples of guys losing the plot but generally they are excellent at this part of the game).

I recently started listening to the "Golf Smarter" podcast. It covers all corners of the game and has some great interviews, but seems to focus more on course management and the psychology of the game.

Well worth a listen, they talk a lot of sense.
