    Hi guys,

I Live in Holland and am planning to bring my bike over in the plane (renting costs 40+ a day for a decent bike!?) to do a cycle route from my parents house in Rathfarnham to my gran in Cashel in 1 day. I have never cycled in Ireland before but from driving around i know its a lot more dangerous than in Holland. I would like to cycle to cashel through the wicklow mountains (never get a hill here in holland) but have no clue of what route to take! Could anyone give me a hand and some advice as to what route to take without getting killed?

I plan on doing it in 1 day so no stops required. (approx 200km according to google earth?)

    Thanks in advance,

    David

    Hardy man!

Main way not to get killed is to wear bright fluorescent cycling gear, and be lit up like a Christmas tree.

The Wicklow Hills and the Dublin Mountains are lovely for cycling. I won't offer a route - any route I offer takes every known curlicue!

    Hi David,
If you planned on going through Wicklow you could go to Laragh, over the Wcklow gap and I think you rejoin the N81 at Hollywood (% think) head across to Carlow from Rathvilly, Castlecomer, Ballyraggett, and head across to the old Cork - Dublin road which you'll see paralel to the motorway and that'll take you down to Cashel.

A nice way to Laragh from Rathfarnham is to go to the Blue Haven by Templeogue Bridge, turn your back to it and go straight ahead, through Firhouse, and then turn left at Bohernabreena (signposted), and go up through Friarstown and Piperstown to the Featherbeds, turn right and keep going up till you reach the Sally Gap, then head for Laragh (signposted)...

Trying to stay off the N roads as they can be fairly dangerous! The route below looks alright. I know the old military road well, after that im in the dark. Is it ok? (link for google maps below)

That looks a good route though you've picked a fairly tough route through Wicklow, an alternative would be to get yourself down to either Blessington or Hollywood/Dunlavin and use the old Kilcullen-Carlow or Kilcullen-Athy-Comer roads, both are fine now that the traffic takes the M9.

Whichever way you choose you should have a nice spin.
