Do you have a pc? (as in, not a mac)

Presuming your laptop is a DVI connection. Google DVI to HDMI cable. Done.

    VGA to HDMI adapter or
DVI to HDMI. Depends on the laptop. My guess would be VGA.

You may need to make alternative arrangements for sound, though.

ETA: Referring to DVI -> HDMI and VGA -> HDMI options

Simply fire up the Samsung all share server on your laptop and choose to play it on your smart tv.

    You are.

If your lappy has VGA, get a VGA-HDMI adaptor/box.
    DVI? DVI-HDMI cable.

And this will give you pictures but (most likely) no sound through your TV. I'm flagging this just in case it's a problem.

Yup, once your Laptop has VGA Out and your TV has VGA In.

VGA has no audio has alluded to above and so you will also need to have a 3.5 Aux-In on your TV for that.

I have my laptop hooked up like this but rather than have two separate leads, got one of these pretty cheap bad boys on Amazon which cleverly combines both:

Most HD TV's will have a VGA port anyway so you don't even need to convert from VGA to HDMI.

Just be aware that VGA doesn't distribute sound to the TV (unlike HDMI) so you might want to get some nice speakers too or else you'll be listening to it on the laptop.

Yes, this too, though newer renditions of HDMI can carry sound from DVI, or at least, my laptop does.
Buy a 3.5mm audio jack-aux cable to plug laptop to stereo in case.

The cable I posted above allows me to watch content from my Laptop on not just my TV but also my Optoma Projector (in other words: anything with a VGA and Aux-In).

RTE Player, YouTube, Spankwire .. the whole shebang.

Breaking the laptop or TV certainly wouldn't help.

If you have a 15 pin VGA port on your laptop (which you probably do), and if you have a HDMI port on your TV, then you need a VGA to HDMI cable, such as this:

That cable is HDMI to VGA and wouldn't work the other way around.

What your suggesting that cable would do, a costly device like the following is needed:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-Converter-Supports-Computer-Lifetime/dp/B002C6NP5C/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343402102&sr=1-6

Nah, OP - just get the cable I suggested in my above post and you won't need any adapters.

Not being smart, but did you set the TV input to VGA? It might not auto-detect.

It will work. Sans audio. You don't need an integrated lead, if OP has speakers he should have a 3.5mm lead to hook up to the TV, assuming the TV has a 3.5mm input. Or just hook external speakers up as well.

Here's a better idea to help:
    What fupping laptop have you?

Left click the windows icon at the bottom left, search for "dxdiag" (without the quotes)

Tell us what it says for "System Manufacturer" and "System Model" and we can tell you what you can use.

And your telly model would be nice to know too.

    It won't.

A simple cable cannot convert an analog VGA signal into a digital HDMI one - you need an adapter for that like the one linked to.

Not being dumb, but how would I do that?

According to the instructions with the TV I should just press source until the it pops up but nothing did.

Actually, you're right. Although a TV will have a VGA port usually (unless it's ancient) so get a normal VGA cable + 3.5mm audio lead.

As Brutal says, you'd need to be sure that the laptop is actually outputting via VGA first (not sure if that needs to be turned on or not). After that it certainly sounds like you're doing the right thing, although again on one of my old TVs, some of the inputs had multiple options and you had to delve into a buried menu to set it. Alternatively, you *could* be flicking past the input too quickly. On my current TV, even if you're on the right input it can take a while (i.e. a few seconds) to actually display anything.

    I'm clutching at straws...

Which was my advice in my first post, as it's precisely what I use and cheap too ;)

Dunno about VGA to HDMI. But what end is the HDMI plugged into? (HDMI is the left thinner one)

    HDMI into the laptop

Right I assume it's a windows 7 laptop you have.

On the desktop, right click and pick screen resolution. Then under display (in the window that opens) you should have a choice of displays, is that right?

The guy talking about HDMi and VGA not being compatible is correct. I've used a HDMI/ DVi adapter before but I don't know if they're hardware reliant or not.

Not meaning to be smart OP but this is the kind of thing you should really ask in a specialist forum where people will all know their stuff. I can think of 4 off the top of my head on boards alone!

That said, you've already been given the correct answer: If your comp doesn't have HDMI out Both VGA and DVI will work fine however you'll need to connect your comp to the TV or speakers seperately as these don't transmit sound.

It depends entirely on what your comp can output and your tv can receive so until you post model numbers the advice will be generic.

Must admit, I wasn't expecting that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,689 ✭✭✭Tombi!

    Yup, that's right.

Okay, try to just pick the second of the two. That shuld turn your laptop screen black.

Then it'd be a matter of just finding the right thingy (you know when you flick through the ports on the tv) and it should show what's on your laptop (even though the screen on the laptop is shut off)

And yes, "thingy" is trademarked by me. :pac:

    This is correct. My mistake.

However, the link you provided is a VGA and audio cable. Is that capable of 1080p in the same way that a VGA to HDMI via a converter box would be?
