Do I need I7?

I've been asked to purchase a pair of computers for some new starts in work. They will be doing sql development.

Ideally, we wanted to buy them locally. Tried all the usual suspects, pc world, harvey norman, soundstore, and a few small local companies.

    I7's are like hens teeth!

I3's and I5's litter the place.

I'm starting to wonder is an i7 overkill for the usage required?

Any sql developers out there, what are you using, and do you wish you'd gone faster?

So far Dell seems to be the cheapest, but they have a long lead time I believe. The Dell I was using as a comparison is a Dell Vostro 470 MT

I did see a nice i5 in harvey norman, an acer x3990 for 579 that I was interested in, but am trying to keep in line with another developers XPS 8300 with an i7 processor.

    Thanks for the read.

Depends what kind of thing they're developing for really. If it's some massive database then more processing power is great. Otherwise I'm sure the i5's would be fine.

There's an Advent Core i7 Sandy Bridge desktop with 8 GB RAM and 2 TB HDD at PC World for €830 and another Advent with a Core i7 Ivy Bridge and 16 GB RAM for €1,180.

I'd avoid Advent like the plague and of course you'll find better offers online.

Funny, Dell is asking for 118 yoyos (+VAT) more for the i7-2600 which is significantly slower than the default i7-3770... :D

I would re-iterate avoid Advent like the plague, although some advent machines I think are MSI rebadged (laptops anyways), for relyability though I would avoid tbh, same goes for packard bell

I'm leaning towards an i5 now. Nice compromise between performance and price. Can always re-purpose if it's not up to it, which I doubt.

    Thanks
