If you can do without pay tv then it is certainly worth it.

Compare the Freesat channel list with what they are paying for from UPC:

You need a Saorview box and a second FreeSAT box to get all the UK and Irish free channels and a dish and an aerial. It is very good if strapped for cash and you have no interest in pay channels like Sports.

Or get a Samsung/Walker/Panasonic TV with satellite tuner.

For the sake of the clarity, the Samsung and Panasonics are Freesat models (with full 7-day EPG on satellite) whereas the Walker is a Free-to-air model with just 'Now and Next' on the satellite EPG.

I have a Free-to-air box (€99 a few years back) and it is superb as a second system for another room. Couldn't really use it as a primary TV system - no proper Channel guide, no recording mechanism (ok optional external USB). Use it every day and very pleased with it.
