2002 VW Golf 1.4 Petrol, Oil Type....?

Sorry for repeating myself but I was asked to raise this as a new thread rather than tagging it on to a long deceased thread, as I had done....:o

My question is what oil should I be using, I was told by the mechanic that services it to use "semi synthetic", but should it be 5/30 or 10/40....?

On the thread I asked I was told 10/40 but I'm pretty sure I've seen 5/30 when I looked it up on line while waiting for a reply (and before I bought the 5/30 )

My follow up question is, does it really matter....?
Like most 1.4 VW Golfs, the car uses about a litre of oil every 1000 miles so I'm constantly topping it up.....

    Thanks

If it is using oil then just put 10w40 into it.

The factory spec is for a 5w30 fully synthetic long life oil. But IMO there is no point putting that into it if you are using 1 litre per 1000 miles.
