Hi would anyone have any idea how much it would (should) cost to get the timing chain (not belt) on a '00 Yaris changed? And could anyone recommend a reasonable garage (anywhere in Dublin)

the chain is noisy, hence I need to get it sorted

    thanks

pretty sure there's a chain rather than a belt on these, no need to change except if its noisey

    yep, they're all timing chain.

    thanks

sorry it is a chain and it is noisy

Is it definitely the chain and not just the water pump?

i got the car checked for something unrelated and the mechanic said it was the chain that was causing the noise - mileage is around 80k if relevant

    That's low enough mileage.

Has the car been serviced regularly and had regular (i.e. no more than yearly) oil changes?

not as regularly as it should have been

Parts an labour would be in the region of €450-€500 I think.

Make sure whoever does it is changing the whole kit(chain, tensioner, guides, crank and cam gear, oil seal etc) as just changing the chain alone is often only a short term fix.

    thank you

I was quoted €350 today for the chain, water pump (I think) etc - is that a good deal?

not a car person I'm afraid...

Someone on here will have to clarify about chains, but with belts you should change the water pump when the belt is changed.

What you need to ask is if they are talking about only the chain, or if they are including the cost of all of the other parts Nissan Doctor is talking about, for belts (I've never had a car with a chain just belts) it's called the timing belt kit, and includes everything, as opposed to the timing belt which is just the belt.

Was that just for parts? Or did it include fitting?

I got the impression that it included fitting, but as I wasn't sure what I (or he) was talking about, I would have to double check

Alright, go back and ask what it includes, is it the belt and pump, or the full kit and pump and does it include fitting.

do you find the garage you are dealing with hard to talk to?

    What size engine is it?

I assume they will understand "full kit"??

the garage I dealt with was the place I had to get the car towed to (for an unrelated reason), I never really intended on asking them to sort this

I just don't have a clue about these things and want to make sure that 1) I am not ripped off and 2) I get the problem fixed properly

    it's a 1 litre engine

Ok I don't know a huge amount about cars, but if I were you I'd pay the €100 to get your car to a mechanic you trust, or is recommended to you, who will listen to you and give you details like Nissan Doctor did.

That means you don't have to worry.

I looked up the price of a full timing chain kit for a 00 1.0 yaris on a parts site, and it varies from about 175-285 depending on the exact car, so that price you were quoted possibly doesn't include fitting for a full kit if it's the more expensive parts.

Would you consider getting the car moved to a mechanic you know/have recommended? Where is the car?

Personally for me, I'd rather deal with a garage/mechanic I feel comfortable with and explain stupid stuff to me, or listen when I ask them not to e.g. tighten bolts too tight on a wheel so I can't take it off.

Gives me confidence in what they are doing. When you talk to them, ask if they are just replacing the chain or the full timing chain kit, they will know the difference, and most good mechanics/garages will happily show you the details of what they have ordered in my experience.

Chain kits for the Yaris are available with or without crank/cam gears so check which your getting. If the chain is noisy then wear is likely on the gears too so they should always be changed.

I am in Dublin 8 and haven't been in Dublin that long, so I don't have a 'trusted mechanic' if you like - open to suggestions?

To be honest j, and I have to say I've never met him, nor had any work done by his garage, your best bet might be to start having a pm conversation with Nissan Doctor.

If you search this forum, there is an entire thread of testimonials from people who have had him work on their cars, and he has a great reputation here for being friendly, helpful, and he's fierce patient and good at dealing with people who don't know much about cars going by both the testimonials, and his posts here.

Ask the garage to give you a day or two to think about the job, have the chat with Nissan Doctor in the meantime, and decide if it's worth getting the car to where he is (think it's Drumcondra) and take it from there?

I'd recommend my mechanic, but he's in Swords, you might as well get a recommendation closeish to you.

Others might have other recommendations for D8, but I can't remember any.

Anyway good luck with it. :)
