I'm sure we all heard the news the other day about CIE in need of a further subvention.......but don't CIE have a broadband network they could sell to another state body - eNet - so any telecom provider involved in the provision of the last mile would have fewer state bodies to deal with!?
CIE's broadband network could be worth £100m

Broadband elements of Iarnrod Eireann's signalling network could be worth about £100 million (€127 million), according to telecoms sources.

Think about this suggestion for the NRA.......could CIE consider this as a way of earning income?

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Deputy Pat Rabbitte): Information on Pat Rabbitte Zoom on Pat Rabbitte The Communications Regulation (Premium Rate Services and Electronic Communications Infrastructure) Act, 2010, which amended the Communications Regulation Act 2002, permits the National Roads Authority (NRA) to make its road ducts on national roads available to facilitate the roll-out of backhaul fibre networks by the industry.

The legislation allows the NRA to make a charging scheme for access to these ducts, subject to the approval of the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport — who has policy responsibility for roads in Ireland.........

My officials have been informed by the NRA, that it intends to shortly publish its policy regarding the use of underground national road capacity by electronic communications network operators.

Just a thought, I'm sure there a million reasons why they wouldn't do this, otherwise they would have done it already!
