Phased Return to work / illness benefit

Hi all, my other half is currently in receipt of illness benefit, as she has been out sick for a few months now.
The company doctor reckons she might be able to return to work soon, but only on a phased basis (e.g. a 4-hour day in the first week, then the same the following week, and be re-assessed by a physio to see if everything is ok after the return). (just to add - the job is very physical and involves a lot of heavy lifting).

So - we were wondering if anyone has experience of a phased return to work? how does it work out with the illness benefit? we assume if she goes back, that she'd have to be paid by the job for those hours, but then does that stop the illness benefits completely, or is there some mechanism in place for this kind of scenario (maybe illness benefit is reduced or something....).

any help would be appreciated ;)
    Andy
