Four of us play a few of these every year for fun, usually fundraisers. We play just for fun and the closest we every come to winning anything is in the raffle afterwards:D

I often notice the same teams doing very well year in year out. So I was wondering if there are any strategies Boardies use to maximise point scoring? e.g. same player teeing off last who putts first etc?

Not really Joe. No secret hidden tricks

You need bandits. As many per team as possible. That's the secret. High handicappers who drive the ball straight and long that have a great short game, and can zero in those approach shots.

Apart from that its about having fun, not concentrating on the score too much. It's a bit about luck, if you dovetail well you'll will usually feature, if you dont you have no chance.

Cheers. We're 4 average players playing off around 18 and none of us hit 36 pts in single comps that often!

Tactics are probably more relevant to scrambles. Guess we just have to get a few good breaks on the day. Last two times we ended up with a shocking team score of 74pts with the winners breaking 100pts.

Generally speaking I find that the only way to win any kind of classic/charity event is to cheat.

Id be willing to put money in it there are guys out there just for the prize with no honour at all.

Sorry for the cynical answer but in my experience it has been the truth

Depending on how everyone else is doing in your team a lot of the time at least 1 person is going to have to suck it up and play for the safe 2 points.
If you all just play your own game, while you might end up with a couple of 7 pointers, you will end up with lots of 3 (or worse!) pointers which is a disaster in these events.

As far as putting goes, you shouldn't worry about playing in order of distance to the pin. You want to lock in safe points so the guys who have maybe a longer birdie putt can then be aggressive in taking on the putt

This appears to be your weakness, If you are not hitting 36 pts in competitions regularly then you are playing below your handicaps and will have little or no chance in a team event. Unless you have a lucky day where you dovetail well.

In the format you talk about, the minimum is 5 points per team per hole (25% above handicap) but would not guarantee a win at that rate. In my experience, winners average above 5 pts average per hole and usually winning teams have a couple of players who consistantly play to their handicaps and who can be depended on for 2 pts minimum per hole.

So you & your buddies either need to start hitting 36 pts regularly in your singles competitions or have higher handicaps.

A lot of it is luck on the day played one yesterday we ended up with 91 points. We had a 3 handicapper who was 2 points on 12 holes think he had 3 birdies as well. The rest of us were hit and miss but had a lot of 3 points between us. Had 2 holes where we had 4 3 pointers so that was a waste a couple of 7 point holes and a couple of 3's. As long as you have that steady 2 points its up to the rest of the team to make 3 point pars. Agressive play is the key.
That said i think 101 won the comp we may have been second but with 2 to score on each hole u have to be into the 90 points to have a hope.
