Going Private

If you're being treated in the public system but want to go private how do you go about this? Is it even possible without insurance? I *know* it's expensive, but is it possible?

Do you just phone up a consultant & ask for appointment, or do you still need a referral? Can you pick anyone in the country or do you have to be in their "catchment" area? Do the records held by the public consultant transfer to the private?

Clearly I have no idea about any of the private system so please be nice...

What sort of think do you want to see a consultant about? (just generally not asking your specific medical history). If it's something like dermatology then your costs are going to be on the smaller end of the scale, i.e. just office visits. But if it may require a procedure then you are getting into much larger amounts of money.

Whether or not you can just ring the private secretary and request an appointment will vary from person to person and also depend on the type of doctor they are.

You want a private consultation but you don't have insurance. Can you do it? Yes.

If you are looking for a private consultation, you can go to whatever doctor/consultant that you would like to see.

Generally the consultant that you want to see will look for a referral from your GP or other doctor, prior to seeing you. You can check this yourself by contacting the relevant consultant's private secretary (at the private consulting rooms/private surgery).

Regarding transfer of records, your new doctor should be able to ask for copies of your medical records to be sent to him. There shouldn't be a problem transferring records between public/private.

A pediatric nephrologist for my 5.5yr old daughter.

Thanks for your comments. Guess it's time to get ringing around.

Here's the link to the private clinic at Temple Street.

When ringing around I would ask what the difference is between the private and public waiting times. My mother saw an endocrinologist recently and there was a 4 month wait for both.
