Audi TT problems

I recently bought a 2004 Audi TT 1.8 quattro, for the first week everything was fine but lately I have noticed a couple of problems. When I am driving I can hear a whirring/humming noise which seems to sound as though it is coming from the engine. When I get up over 10MPH it starts and continues at any speed. When decelerating it seems to get slightly louder and when my foot is on the brake I can kind of feel the sensation as I slow down, the noise stops at about 5MPH. Also it seems to be eating petrol. I have an average of about 30.0MPG which is about normal for this car but €50 worth of petrol only lasts about 160 miles. I put coolant and power steering fluid into the car but it made no difference.

Also the petrol gauge is broken, when the tank is empty the gauge shows half full. There is also a digital reader which states how many miles until empty. This seems to be up and down but not wildly off.

I called the dealer who said it basically wasn't their problem, he said to try the crowd that deal with the warranty. I contacted them but they said the car would need to pretty much break down as they don't deal with investigating noises

    Couple of questions:

Does anyone have any idea what this sound could be?

Am I able to bring it to a garage and have a quote for work to be done? Is their a charge for this? I am broke for a few weeks as I bought the car outright.

How much would it cost approximately to have the fuel gauge/digital reader reset.

Thanks in advance for any help, tbh I am useless with cars :)

wheel bearing ? binding brake ? as you can feel some sensation in the pedal ,binding brake would increase fuel consumption

Is it easy to fix if that is the problem?

Well, you're dashpod is faulty - google Audi Dashpod and you'll see no end of them. So is mine. Half-full = Empty, right ? :D

Anyhoo, I'm sending mine of here, in the next couple of weeks: http://www.bba-reman.com/uk/index.aspx

    http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=audi_tt_dashboard_failing

Standard Repair is £115, or £170 if the central LED panel needs replacing as well. UPS carriage back is £ 25, and they take 5 days to turn it around.

Interestingly, a look at the list of all the bits they repair shows just how crappy modern electronics are....the good ol' VAG is very well represented...;).. http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=hints_and_tips#audi

I think you have a binding/sticking brake caliper, so it might be a 30 minute job, or something more in-depth. One of my rear ones is sticking, and is being un-stuck today. I suspect it's because of the handbrake, and the car doesn't get used much. Just my 0.02. So yes, you'd have some noise, and you'd use more juice. Did you notice if any wheel/brake is warmer than the others ? How does the handbrake work - well, sticky, useless ?

Now, these guys told me they do the TT repair as well, but charge € 470 for it, but when I pushed him for exactly what they were doing............I wasn't 100% convinced.......the fact that I had a blinding migraine at the time (I was in the place, collecting another car), and I was refused a drink of water to take a tablet......well, lets just say he didn't sell the service very well...

    Hi thanks for the responses.

Galwaytt - I haven't noticed if one wheel/brake is hotter than another but i'll check it out. The handbrake is quite sticky! Do the BBA crowd work in Dublin too?

I know how much fuel i'm using because I reset the trip counter each time I fill up and the warning light comes on when the tank is empty.

EDIT: I don't mind that the fuel gauge is off I am more worried about the noise problem because I don't have the money to fix it right now. If I continue driving will it make it worse?

Donal in KC Systems can repair the instrument clusters in these for reasonable money. He had done several for us over the years:

As for the noise, it could be anything from a wheel bearing to a sticking brake caliper to a rear diff problem to a mismatched set of tyres. You need to get someone who is familiar with TTs to check it out for you. Where are you located?

Hi George, thanks for your response and the link. I am based in West Dublin, do you know any good garages that can give me a free quote for work to be done? Or do garages even provide that service?

George is the man to talk to or let view the car,his Garage is near Port laoise but well worth the drive down IMO.He knows the 1.8T inside out.

Any garage should be able to diagnose the noise for you I would think.
The instrument cluster is an issue with most of them as detailed above. Just to add, I had a TT a few years back and a new car battery solved all the dash issues it had - such as flickering gauges but I do know that most require the rebuild as mentioned.
The TT is a great car imo. Just spend wisely when it comes to servicing and repair. I know when I bought mine, there were bills for thousands in the service history from a independent dublin garage for what was normal run of the mill service items. So price around and find a good honest garage and it will be like running a golf.

Hi George, I tried to send a message to your profile but I can't as I haven't had enough forum posts. If possible can I get you to PM me some details for your garage? I have a brother in Laois so i'm down there often enough thanks :)

BBA reman Are a great crowd to deal with as are KC systems. I've had a few a6 gear control unit repaired by bba in the past and all were done perfectly. KC systems have done work for me too and were excellent and quick.
