Hi, a friend of mine got Saor View over the weekend and told me that he gets 200 channels for free for a once off payment.

I was playing around with it yesterday and i didn't find the channels that easy to locate...

Has anyone else on here got Saor View... what are your general opinions about it...

I found this list which tells you all of the frequencies but i don't see 200 channels listed - http://free-tv.ie/astra-satellite-frequencies

Your friend did not get Saorview he got Freesat. You cannot get Freesat channels on a Saorview box so there is not even any point in looking for tghem there.

In order to get Freesat one ought to have a satellite dish connected to a Freesat box. This usually costs around €200 between installatyion and equipment. However if you are already a Sky customer you would already have these channels on your Sky box or if you have been in the past all that you would have to do is connect the cable from the Satellite to a Freesat box. A Freesat receiver would cost under €100 euro and then you weould have the channels listed above. BBCs and ITVs etc.

    Hi, thanks for your reply...

Yeah, spot on he paid €200 for the box / installation and it is connected to an aerial / dish that he already had...

He had sky and has now cancelled that...

So how many channels should he be able to get then, and is that list that i provided the correct list, thanks again for your help...

That list is correct but you'll also get the regional BBC/ITV channels which inflates the channel numbers.

You can pick up a Soarview box fairly cheap, you'll get all the standard Irish channels plus RTE2 HD, 3E, News, RTE+1 and RTE JR.

You can get a list of the free satellite channels here:

    http://www.lyngsat.com/Eutelsat-28A-and-Astra-1N-2A-2B.html

You can get the ones coloured in yellow. If the box does HD you should be able to get the light blue/green ones too.
The darker green ones are encrypted so not available.

The "200 channels" probably counts the various regional versions of BBC and ITV etc. also there are many Asian language channels and shopping channels.

btw. There are more channels available from other satellite positions too, the channels listed on the link are the ones you get on a standard Sky dish without moving it.

Thanks for all of the replies... what does the box do then... If he already had the existing sky box (Which was cancelled), why would he need a new saorview or freesat box

An Sky box with no subscription will not give you RTE 1/2 TV3 or TG4, that's why you'd need Saorview.

Freesat or FTA Satellite will not give you any more channels than you can get on Sky box with no subscription.

He may have got what is known as a combo box, that will do Saorview an FTA. He reall need only have got a Saorview approved box. His existing Sky box tunes in the FTA channels once the card is taken out/cancelled. Have a good look at these forums and you will find out all about combo boxes. There are several models available.
