Are most of the Atheists on these forums under 18 ?
Because from reading the way they answer posts it seems to be
full of childish jibes and jibberish etc....

Some of the posters on A+A seem to be very mature but the balance seems
to sway more on the side of a circus of clowns.

Here is a quote by C.S. Lewis

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

I think it's more down to the absurd level of trolling that this forum receives than a lack of maturity amongst the majority of regular posters.
That's not to say there aren't gobshites on here but no more so than on the rest of boards I would say.

You appear to have missed the sentiment expressed in the quote by lewis you posted in its entirety.

This forum needs a healthy dose of sillyness. If we didn't have our sense of humor we'd go mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 badspealler

Pretty much the same on any internet forum, imho...

In fairness, A+A is a pretty emotive topic, so this kind of behaviour is to be expected to a greater extent than on other forums. Don't make the assumption that everyone who doesn't respond to the lunatic fringe's contribution, agrees with either the contributor or their so-called "contribution".

We all know the Dirty Harry Callaghan quote about opinions being like a55holes...

    Peace :D

As mentioned, there's been a serious influx of trolls recently.
Serious questions get serious answers, but stupid/disingenuous questions get what they deserve.

If you think a post gets a response it doesn't deserve, use the report function.

It's hard work being a moderator on A+A

Keep up the good work Dades

Funny. I opened this thread thinking it was going to be a commentary on a study by some (unknown to me) writer with the surname Matuirty, writing about the psychological or sociological aspects of how people interact on Internet forums. :)

I remember when I first started reading this forum, I was very impressed with the clear and articulate posts by some of the regulars. While many of the posts from non-thinking theists didn't deserve to be treated seriously, I thought allowing too many obviously stupid and trolling posts detracted from the good ones and decreased the overall signal-to-noise ratio.

On one occasion, I used the "report post" feature for an obvious troll on the The Origin of Specious Nonsense thread. I received a great response from robindch (moderator) explaining how it's useful to have certain threads which go relatively unmoderated and that this particular thread was the
"Specious Nonsense" thread and it certainly does live up to its name -- abandon hope, all ye who enter here! Or avoid it if you don't like it :)

I think that some issues should be dealt with seriously but humour is an appropriate response for many of the posts on this forum - even though it often does't translate well on the Internet.

    Nope.

Like for instance if I were to say it seems you seem to like the space bar?
Some of the posters on A+A seem to be very mature but the balance seems
to sway more on the side of a circus of clowns.

Here is a quote by C.S. Lewis
Pro-tip in being taken seriously: Don't quote Lewis.
Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves.
Isn't that what you are doing? Presuming that people here are under 18, and immature in comparison to you. Yet, the one you quote says that the mentality/position you inhabit nullifies you from being an adult.
When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
    Read what you quote.

For my part, I wouldn't say I'm particularly mature or immature. The judgement of that one I leave to those who hears or reads what I say or type. And people are welcome their opinions/interpretations of me on whatever basis.

Show the love, spare the space bar.

If I ever make another topic as active as that one, I'll be happy. Hopefully it'll have less negative stigma from everyone on this forum though.

    MODS fix the spelling

    Please
I don't know... sometimes mistakes should be left to be.

Like this classic in Literature that has been left alone.

In the case here the spelling error takes the sting out the accusation in the OP.
