Toshiba Motherboard problems

Hi guys, I have my Toshiba satellite l650d now for just over a year and and half now and the mother board is gone on it, was told its not worth fixing that for another few bob I would be able to get a new one. Is it a common problem with them?, im not too happy it only lasted a year and a half!
