Gooseberry Wine

    Heavy crop of gooseberries this year, I already made all the gooseberry jam I need so was thinking could I make wine from the remaining fruit. Is it possible to make gooseberry wine using natural yeast rather than the powdered form?

    Pretty sure all unwashed fruit will have wild yeasts on it. Gooseberries surface area should lend itself well to a brew but the advice I've generally seen is against it on the grounds of consistency.

    I am making a small amount of gooseberry wine at the moment I used a wine yeast that I got in a health food shop ( its sells a small amount of home brew stuff )...as this is just a little experiment at the moment I so not want to buy a hydrometer so is there any easy way to know approximately what proof my wine is?

    You will need a hydrometer.

    I could approximate ABV if I was using any kind of regular sugar or malt, but there is no way of knowing what gravity the gooseberry juice will come out at.
