I'm taking the plunge and getting one of these babies. I considered a Defy 3, but was warned off Sora due to the thumbshift awkwardness whilst on the drops. The 105 Defy 1 is a little above my needs.

Anyway, here's hoping it's a good bike! Does anyone have one?

Hi OP... just wondering how much are you expecting to spend on the Defy 2.

I'm also planning on taking the plunge. I'll be basically coming from a hybrid and this will be my first road bike. The Giant Defy series seems to be one of the best you can get on a budget but i'm wondering if I would be better off waiting until the 2013 version comes out (which is around september I believe) and see if the Defy 1 would drop in price. Does that happen or would I be better off just buying the Defy 2 now?

The Defy 1 may drop in price, however you may struggle to find it in your size. (As is the case with all "end of year bargains")

In actual fact, I was in a bike shop today and heard they already have 2013 Giants in boxes that had just arrived. Perhaps you might see one closer than you think.

As far as the Defy's go, I purchased my Defy 3 in 2011 and it's been an absolutely great bike to get me hooked on an even better sport. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and get the bug like the rest of us!

Would I be better off waiting for the 2013 model or would the differences be fairly negligible?

For your first bike, it probably won't make much difference.

I haven't looked at the spec differences between the two, but it's most likely mostly cosmetic changes.

If you get a significantly good deal, I'd say go for it!

If I remember right, the Defy 2012 was a new frame model, so upgrades will most likely not be in the frame. The Sora groupset has been upgraded, and a Tourney Road groupset introduced at the lower end, I think to replace 2300, so they would be the only differences other than paint, I reckon.
