Is the Pathfinder the 2.5 diesel? If so avoid like the plague, the amount of them and navaras in breakers yards with engines gone is unreal.
I had and 05 xc90 d5 auto for 6 months. It was wasnt the fastest machine by any means. Averaged about 28mpg. It was the 5 speed 163 bhp. The 185 is a 6 speed. But the comfort and ability in the heavy snow of 2010/2011 was superb.

I'd have the XC90. It's still a pig, but it's less of a pig than the Pathfinder.

What will you be using it for? Family car? Work vehicle? etc

Will be using it for both family and farm work - 70: 30 split approx. Pulling trailers every other weekend. Currently run a 99 2.8 Pajero but its getting long in the tooth. Herself is from up north so need somethng pretty decent to do the monthly trips there. Had people carriers before but they dont last too long pulling and dragging.

I wouldn't go for either of them going by your needs
I'd look for a 7 seater toyota landcruiser. Extremely reliable, great for pulling a load and not that bad a spec.
Might have to come down a year or so from the volvo and pathfinder your looking at

Pathfinder is a dog of a yoke. Truck engine and gearbox. Horrifically unrefined as the interior is just crap.

XC90 all the way, great car. Shows that a big powerful engine isn't everything.

Wasn't it just the older generation that had crap engines

Chalk and cheese, XC90 if just a straight choice. Wouldn't use either for hard work or serious towing, XC90 is only rated to 2.5t or so, a bit better than most SUVs but less than the 3.5t of most full size 4x4s.

We had an early 08 that had engine issues, so I don't think it was totally sorted by then. Engine didn't give up, but would hesitate at full throttle.

Think we got the fuel pump replaced and it was great on the way home, until I had to slow to 20km/h and then buried it in 2nd afterwards - no acceleration from 3/4 throttle after that. Made it quite tricky to drive.

OP - The XC90 is the better vehicle on the road, but I wouldn't think it's going to be up to heavy farm use. If the engine doesn't go on the Pathfinder that's probably the better allrounder (towing rating was the highest in it's class when it was launched).

You might be better off trying to find another Pajero. Almost as good as the LandCruiser but should be a bit cheaper.
