Reception problems

We live in the border country, and are still working off an aerial. I bought my mam a new tv, which is ready for the switchover. All well and good, but the channel reception has turned to ****e over past few months. She is now watching the channels on the old analogue service she is picking up. Why is the reception going like this, and what can I do to fix it?

    Where approx is she located?
Does she receive all 4 Irish channels incl TV3 on the old analogue signal?
Does she receive the UK channels with the aerial also?
How many aerial for the Irish and UK channels?

The house is on the Fermanagh/Monaghan border. She receives all of the Irish and all of the British channels. With the new tv she is receiving E4, BBC3 and BBC4, Viva, all of those free view channels. Thing is she won't watch any of them because they keep flicking in and out! We ahve only one aerial, on the roof

I don't think there's anywhere on the Monaghan/Fermanagh border where 1 aerial would get satisfactory reception of all channels, north & south.

Maybe you mean 1 aerial installation with several actual aerials on it?

TBH i don't know..I'll take a look this weekend. Does that have anyhing to do with the reception problem though?

Are you 100% sure she does not have a dish?

If you are getting the UK channels digitally after October 24th the power will increase and the reliability of the UK digital stations will increase .If you are getting the basic analogue UK channels via an aerial now then you should get them OK from November onwards on digital.

The vast majority of reception problems are down to faulty or inadequate receiving aerial systems.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the UK Freeview channels until after switchover. If you're receiving all the Irish analogue channels, most likely from Cairn Hill in Longford, you should have no problem getting reliable Saorview reception.

A photo of the aerial(s) & a list of the UHF channel nos. for analogue & digital (esp. Saorview) would be useful.

Viva is encrypted on Satellite, so it looks like Freeview.

Reckon 2 aerials will be required, 1 for Brougher and one for Monaghan or Cairn Hill.

It may be best to wait till the transmitter power is turned up in October both sides of the border....cos things may fix themselves then.

    Why?

So you know for a fact that Cairn Hill & Monaghan aren't already on full power? I thought they were.

It never ceases to amaze slightly annoy me how people keep adding replies to threads like this, repeating what has already been said & where the OP has provided no additional input.

I found 2 red areas on the coverage map attributed to Monaghan, to the west of the tx site. Maybe they have to protect Lisbellaw until after ASO, when it stops using ch. 55?

OP does not spend entire life on Boards, OP does not live in said house and is awaiting chance to take photo for another poster to confirm their opinion. OP really appreciates all help given by nice people on Boards, OP does not need your sarcasm thanks.

The sarcasm(?) was not directed at the OP.

If I was north of a line from Castlebar - Longford - Drogheda I would counsel waiting for full power in late 2012 before I spent any money doing _something_ which may not be necessary long term.

South of that line the transmitters are nearer or at full power already.

I don't know what is wrong with Ronnie, honest. :D

Strange, but I don't see where anyone in this thread mentioned spending money on anything.

I think what you really mean to say is that you know better than the rest of us how it will all work out?
