How much alcohol do you drink a day?

So, the Irish are well known for loving their alcohol....a pint at lunch for some people or a glass of wine in the evening to relax for others, but I'm wondering just how much on a daily basis do most people drink?
I know people who drink every single day...and the amount they drink is a hell of a lot in my opinion, so I'm curious to see what everyone else generally has (might just a prove a point while I'm at it!).
Also, when does the amount you have every day become too much that it should be considered a problem?

I think most would say drinking daily is in itself an issue. Wouldn't even drink once a week of late. Or once a month. It'd be rare.

most nights i have 2 cans of beer, and binge at the weekend. Trying to knock the bingeing on the head but I enjoy the 1 or 2 cans during the week so much after a long day.

I never, ever drink during the week.

Mon - Fri is for work and some clean decent fun and at the weekends - anything goes, but I've calmed down a lot these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭tmc86

I'd rarely drink during the week unless I was maybe out for dinner but otherwise I'd wait untill the weekend (fri/sat) to drink.

Don't drink every weekend mind maybe every other week.

I think drinking every day is an older generation thing, like you'd get the older lads calling in after work or in the evening for a few pints.

Plus I couldn't afford a few pints every day not at today's prices!

I only drink weekends some bulmers, koppaberg and smirnoff vodka lemonade

And just how many meals a day do you have? : )

I would drink very rarely, I couldn't break it down to weekly figure as most weeks I wouldn't drink at all so on average maybe 10-12 bottles of beer a month.

I'm of that exact opinion myself! A lot of people seem to think drinking daily is no problem if it helps them relax and if they don't have "too much". It's hard to agree on what is too much though

I drink alcohol about once every 2 weeks or less.

I wouldn't want to drink every day or night (even if it was free booze ) and unless we go out for a meal , it's mainly the weekend when I will have a few cans at home or a few pints at the local which would be the norm for me .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭scdublin

Wow, I'm actually surprised about how many people only drink at weekends or generally don't drink at all! I'm in the generally don't drink at all category, but always feel like I'm a bit on my own there.
I think having a drink with dinner is grand, or even having a drink in the evening when you're relaxing...but when you're having half a bottle or a full bottle a night, seems a bit too much right?

We sure will...but drinking in excess is only going to hurry along that process. It can be quite a selfish habit!

Probably get through 2 bottles of wine a week with the missus, but trying to cut down the midweek stuff. Nearly always have a couple of extras on a Friday night at home, maybe a G&T or two, maybe a few beers. Don't really enjoy heavy drinking sessions any more tbh.

Not true, if you NEED to drink every day then you probably have issues.

I drink most days but normally no more than a couple of beers or a glass or 2 of wine. If I'm out it might be 4 or 5 or 6 but last night I had nothing, the previous night I had a beer & 2 glasses of wine with dinner, tonight I'm out again so it'll be something similar. Everything in moderation

Isn't it true that drinking a glass or two every day is far better for you than staying dry for the week and going on the serious sauce at weekends?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭Sea Filly

I picked the first option, because I only drink once or twice a month, which works out at less than one drink per day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,048 ✭✭✭✭Snowie

I don't drink that much.. May once a month if even.. alcohol makes me depressed so I try not to indulge in it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭Lollipops23

I generally don't drink on worknights. I'd normally have a few drinks over a weekend, either a bottle of wine if we stay in or a couple of vodkas if I'm out. To be honest I just can't stand losing an entire day to a hangover, so tend not to get hammered very often.

    Between 50-75ml C2H4O per day.

It's still not good for you. Justify your functioning alcoholism however you need to though.

Bollocks, I was at a AA meeting last night and I don't NEED to drink every day!

I'll drink 2 x 355ml bottles of ale during the week after work & 12 x 355ml bottles of a weekend, usually high ABV stuff ranging from 5.9% - 10%

What's up with this thread? Usually AH is all "if you don't drink, you're a killjoy"...

I'd drink less than once a month.

    It depends really.

Usually one or two pints a night, maybe glasses of wine instead. Then sort of 8-12 pints on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

I drink maybe three or four days a week.

If I'm working the next day, the most I'll have is five or six.

There is the odd time when I'm talked into more but I rarely get really messy drunk if I'm working the next day.

At the weekends, I usually get hammered at least once, usually twice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭hoochis

I have had about 30 bottles of bud this week, all at home. I normally wont drink for months on end but sometimes have a little binge for a couple of weeks. When I binge I will drink from late morning to evening.

Wow five or six seems like a lot if you are working the next day...I know some people can handle their drink better than others but that's a lot in terms of units.
If you wanted to, do you think you'd be able to just not drink for a while? (same questions applies to everyone else who said they have a few drinks every day)
I know someone mentioned there's a difference between wanting to drink and needing to drink, but I honestly think in Ireland in particular where it's such a common thing, that there's a very fine line in between the two.

They told us eggs were bad for us ,then reversed that decision and said they were good and how many others things are bad for us this week but not the next ? Common sense will tell you that everything is moderation is ok but over indulgence isn't and we don't need some ' expert ' to tell us that .

I don't drink a whole lot. I can go weeks without having a drink. I'd much rather relax with a Coke or Pepsi in front of the tv than a beer or a glass of wine.

As it is, I haven't had a drink since Monday night, nor have I felt the need to.

I'm living in Brazil at the moment and the attitude towards drinking here is totally different. I know dozens of people who drink several times during the week, start about eight in the evening and head home about one and up for work the next day about eight.

Drinking regularly isn't seen as a bad thing. As you pointed out, there's a difference between the mentality of someone who wants a drink and someone who needs a drink. In my experience, it's the latter who have serious problems with drink. That said, that doesn't mean the former won't or can't develop a problem with drink.

Wow, I seriously couldn't make it into work if I was doing that! Do they just drink to socialise or is it to relax after work?
I'm told a lot of people have a few glasses of wine after work because it helps them relax, but it gets to the stage where I don't think they even know the difference between wanting it or needing it....it becomes a habit that's rarely broken.

I generally don't drink alcohol during the week at all, and sometimes not at the weekend either.
