Are there any decent cheap ones out there? It doesn't have to be freesat as long as it can tune in satellite channels.

    Between 22" - 32" preferably.

I need it for a location where a box wouldn't be suited.

    you need DVB-S2.
I can't imagine a box being unsuitable as the extra cost of DVB-S2 built in is cost of five boxes.

Less than 37" is small for 16:9. 22" is tiny for 16:9. Remember it's the diagonal not the height.

There are only overpriced sets with DVB-S2. Why is a box out of the question? Why so small a set? Is it for a kitchen shelf?

The Chevron wants a TV with dual tuners and the Samsung has what is looking for along with it been a Smart Tv. It seems he needs this sort of TV to hang up in a place where putting a box is no go. There will be a Walker TV out shortly that will also have dual tuners but it will probably be cheaper than the Samsung.
And as the saying goes you only get what you pay for.

Ideally a TV with a built in satellite tuner should be DVB-S2 compatible and also support a Diseqc switch. It would be handy for getting the Saorsat channels and FTA channels from 28.2East also, (BBC's, ITV's etc.)

My 2 year old Samsung has a DVB-S2 tuner built in. I've had no regrets and glad I paid the few quid extra.

A wall mounted TV with a box looks horrible.

Couple of years ago when I was getting a tv for my bedroom I was doing the same looking for DVB-S2 tv's as it was going to be wall mounted. The price of them was ridiculous so I got a 12v DVB-S2 box that I crudely stuck behind the tv. The box is barely a little bigger than a Sky remote, connects to (and is powered by) the tv via HDMI. There is another wire with a little infra red eye that barely pokes out from behind the tv for the remote.

The UI is a bit clunky, but it's HD and also has Diseq for switching between sats. I'm not sure what it is called or where I even bought it from, but I can remember it cost around 70 Euro delivered from Germany.

Maybe I was lucky with it but 2 years on it has never given one moment of trouble.

Its for a kitchen, and its going smack bang in the centre of a bare wall which has a power point and cable point behind it. I definitely dont want a shelf or a box beside/below or on top of it. This mini tuner sounds interesting though if you had more info that would be great.

It's not the one I got but it gives a good example of what size they are and what they look like working. £130 is a joke, if you look around you'll find them for less than half that. I can't remember the site I got mine off, but it was in German.

Like I said I'm happy with mine, a tuner built into the tv would probably be more elegant but a box protruding out above or below a wall mounted tv is just nasty.

Have a look at amazon.co.uk. There's a selection of compact boxes there.

I'm a bit late here, but I was looking in to this as I gave up my prized Sony 32KDLV5810 with built in Freesat to my 86 year-old father in law as he was completely defeated by the tiny remote buttons for the set top boxes for Saorview and FTA (I might post a thread on this another time - with the help of a separately-bought Sony remote with big buttons we managed to get him sorted - there's a real issue with the digital switchover for people with limited eyesight who can't figure out the tiny buttons on remote controls).

Anyway, I was idly looking around for a replacement at some stage over the next few months as I'm stuck with his cheapo Aldi TV. The paucity of TV's with a built-in DVB-S2 tuner from Irish and UK retailers is well known but it seems that there are many TV's sold in Germany with this feature.

The Conrad.de website seems a good bet - they have very reasonable delivery charges to Ireland. All pages of their website are available in English but it's worth struggling through the German version at least to figure out which one you want, as the English version sometimes doesn't include the model numbers which are necessary to search the manuals for the relevant model.

LG seems a good make (and they seem to have an option in the settings specifically to enable MHEG5 text for Saorview) - you can get a 'HD Ready' 32 inch model for €350 ex delivery: http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/374639/LG-32LS340S-LED-TV-81-cm-32-Zoll-1366-x-768--analog-DVB-T-DVB-C-mit-HDTV-DVB-S-mit-HDTV-Schwarz/SHOP_AREA_17465&promotionareaSearchDetail=005 or full HD for €450 http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/374656/LG-32LS570S-LED-TV-80-cm-32-Zoll-1920-x-1080--analog-DVB-T-DVB-C-mit-HDTV-DVB-S-mit-HDTV-Schwarz/SHOP_AREA_17465&promotionareaSearchDetail=005

Or if you're looking for something smaller they have a 22 inch LG for €279 http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/374673/LG-22LS350S-LED-TV-56-cm-22-Zoll-1366-x-768--analog-DVB-T-DVB-C-mit-HDTV-DVB-S-mit-HDTV-Schwarz/SHOP_AREA_17465&promotionareaSearchDetail=005

Of course the three models above won't have Freesat, just FTA with now/next EPG.

Appreciate the point made earlier about the price of TVs with built in satellite tuners, but I'd be tempted by one of the above on the basis that multiple remotes are a pain.

    use one of these

or a more advanced one ,

1 remote to control them all .

Not sure if the new range of Walker satellite/Saorview TVs have been mentioned here already, see this thread from the Terrestrial forum - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056702030

    The simple answer is No.
There are no decent and cheap ones, there are decent ones but not cheap.
Samsung and Panasonic make TVs 32” up to 50” which have a mix of either Freesat HD tuner, Freeview HD tuner, or both.
I bought a Panasonic 42” with Freeview HD tuner two years ago and it picks up the Saorview but I still need a sat box to get free UK stations.
The same model with both tuners was about a grand at the time.
If you really want TV with only Sat stations then you could buy one of the above with a Freesat HD only tuner but it may set you back 500 sterling.
Check out the Samsung and Panasonic web sites.
One problem you may have is if you decide on a particular model it may not be available, or too expensive, in Ireland.
Richersounds.Co.UK has some models and the shop in Belfast is very helpful, only 2hrs drive.

I think Watty and Jolsens comments are very valid and I have seen that setup Jolsen talks about with the very small Sat box fitted behind the TV and it works well. Think they just used cable ties to attach the box to the TV bracket.
It may be the cheapest option.

One final possibility may be fitting a Sat box further back the cable (in another room) and using an IR transmitter / receiver to control it to change stations.
If this was a runner you could spend your money on a decent small TV and pick up the IR kit fairly cheap.

I know someone who had your problem and he ran cables from TV to a cupboard, behind a wall and connected to Sat box there.
    Good Luck
    The Great Gonzo
