Hey all, My son (20) is thinking of buying a 1995 austin mini as his first car, would anyone be able to give some tips as to what to look out for? how reliable they are ?
    Thanks

IMHO if he is interested in mechanics then that would be fine. If he wants a car that won't have to be tinkering with then I would choose a different car ( Japanese model )

That is my honest opinion on past experience of Mini's

I would expect even a '95 mini to be suffering from rust issues at this stage. He'd have to go into that with his eyes wide open. And as said, I wouldn't be buying it as something reliable.

Great fun to drive. Hard to drive smoothly though, so lots to learn. Lovely low down pull off the ancient motor and more character than nearly anything else on the road.

    However.

    No ABS.
    No Crumple zones.
    very vulnerable in any accident.
Airbags are irrelevant in this car and will be absent.

and it is almost 20 years old metal in a 60 year old design.

A 20 year old bloke is a 20 year old bloke...

Not safe, plain and simple. Up there with him getting a motorbike*

I'm speaking from the experience of having traveled all round Ireland in one when I was 20 - 21 (mates car) until he slid on ice and pushed the steering column through the windscreen after hitting a tree.
