What ski resort

    Hi all,

I am looking for a good ski resort in Europe. Preferably the Alps. I have been to Scandinavia and Austria a couple of times. I am looking for someplace that has some good intermediate slopes and good nightlife. The slopes don't have to be expert, but also don't want 2 crappy hills that they call slopes. And for the night life it doesn't have to be like Ibiza but we would like more than 3 local pubs.

I have been to St. Johann in Austria. This was great when we were starting but looking for something a bit more challenging and with better nightlife. We were thinking St. Anton or Ischgl.

In this day and age we are also looking for the best deal and I hear some places in Slovenia can be good.

So my question is, does anyone know of any place in Europe that has good slopes, good nightlife at a good price?

    Thanks,

Val Thorens in France, great slopes and a very good night life.

Thanks Anthony. One thing missing is the price? What would a typical week cost there? In Austria the travel, accom, ski pass, ski hire and lessons for the week would cost about €750 with drinks and dinner costing about €3.50 and €8.00. All in all the total cost would only be about €1100. How would Val Thorens compare?

You wont get a glass of water for €3.50 in St. Anton!

I must say you have done very well price wise to have everything bar beer and food sorted at the price you quote. St Anton will be a lot more expensive. It does howver have superb skiing and lots of nightlife.
    Dont know about Isgl.

    Hi Fiachra,

Thanks for your reply. Yes after 3 years in the same place you get to know where to go and when for the cheapest prices. The prices have come down on our second and third years consecutively. Personally I don't mind paying a bit extra for beer and food. We would also look for a full package in St. Anton or wherever we end up. We are just looking for something different but the nightlife in Austria I hear is the best. I am wondering what Bulgaria or Slovenia are like for slopes and nightlife.

I haven't been to Bulgaria or Slovenia in Winter but I imagine they might meet the 'two hills they call slopes' description. I've been to both in the Summer and while I don't remember much about the size of Pamporovo, I did a fair bit of walking in Slovenia and from that and subsequent research I'm pretty sure the resorts there are small, but prob cute and with good character.

I have, however, been to both Ischgl and St Anton. Ischgl in particular meets all your criteria save cost. Both have brilliant nightlife, in both the food is quite good and cheaper than say France. But accomodation is expensive, in Ischgl in particular, and harder to get there too. Ski rental is also expensive in both.

The skiing in both is great, the piste skiing in Ischgl is far better imo though. Lots of them and all close to each other. Off piste, which from your description is not what you're looking for, is amazing in St Anton. Ischgl is also a nicer town and there will be no English speaking tourists there, albeit there will be lots of Russian oligarchs, who drive prices up. St Anton still a nice town by skiing standards though. Both have very good spas / saunas. St Anton can be reached by train but the times don't quite suit the Zurich flights from Dub unfortunately.

Both are great, in fact I'll be going back to one or the other for the second or third time this Winter, but you will have to put your hand in your pocket.

If you look at the resort review thread above I think I have done one for both which should have more info.
