Might still be a bit hot in August, I'd leave it to September if I could.

The company I went with (in 97) don't do Egypt any more so can't give you a recommendation but if you can afford it, I'd upgrade to 5 star for the cruise so you get a decent boat.

The Nile Cruise takes 4-5 days so most packages involve spending some time in Cairo and/or in a resort by the Red Sea. Do not stay more than two nights in Cairo, one whole day is enough to see the sights and the air gets very smoggy in the afternoons, we looked out of out hotel window and saw this brown smog sitting over the city so were glad to get out when we did. We crashed out in a nice hotel in Luxor for three nights at the end of the cruise and that was a good contrast to the cruise where you're constantly on the move and doing guided tours of the ancient sites.

The typical Nile cruise starts from Luxor and ends in Aswan, most of the antiquities are along the Nile between those cities. At the end of the cruise some people will go back to Luxor on the boat and others will fly from Aswan to Cairo or the Red Sea resorts. If your package starts with the cruise, try to make sure that you are flying direct to Luxor, otherwise if you fly to Cairo you'll have to make a connection with an internal flight, better to fly direct to Luxor and get a coach straight from the airport to your boat.

Can't help with vaccinations for the simple reason that I went to Swaziland and Mozambique the year before I went to Egypt so I had all the protection (tetanus, polio etc.) I needed. I don't think we needed malaria tablets in Egypt. Your best bet is to consult a local travel medical centre, they will know the current situation and advise you what you need. Don't leave it too late as some vaccinations have to be administered a few weeks before you travel in order to be fully effective.
