    Hello all,
I am looking for advice on booking a 3 night mid week ski break in Feb, I am a total novice when it comes to skiing. It a 40th birthday present for the hubby but the budget is not huge. Preference is to fly out of cork but can go from Dublin either and I don't mind what country we go to.

    Thanks

You'll prob get a better answer over on winter sports. Loads of helpful people although its not very busy these days.

One of the big things to look for is the transfer time from the airport to the resort. If you're only going for 3 days it should be short. Also - dont bother with Ski school - get private lessons as you want to get up to speed ASAP and ski school goes at the pace of the weakest in the class whcih can be painfully slow!

Just don't think a three day ski break is worth it to be honest, as a novice, it's going to take three days to get into the swing of things, if you are on a budget, private lessons could cost you €€€€
First time skiing, most people are crap for the first few days, the most fun comes in the following few days.
My opinion would be to stretch the budget so you can go for a week or just book it now (deposit only) and do it properly next year

Depends on the person. Anyone with any fitness / sporting prowess will be skiing blues after an hour or two. I agree that 3 days is a bit short though

Hi Pinky123, Let me know if you'd like me to move your thread over into 'Winter Sports' for you. It would be no bother & their would also be more posters in there with a keen interest in skiing; resorts; activities etc :)

I agree on going for a week inclusive deal for your first time but to answer your Q.
I go every year at least once for a long weekend.

You can hit Garmisch - fly to Munich ( daily ) its a decent size proper German town so you'll not get the real ski feel - but its a good place for beginners and the upper area is a glacier so you are almost guaranteed snow. There are good rail links from Munich too.
You could fly to Zurich or Geneva and go to pretty much anywhere in the Swiss alps by train or any one of the local transfer companies - Geneva has Morzine close by which is fantastic but pricey there is also transfers available to Chamonix.
My wife and I went to Kitzbhul - about 2 hrs drive from Munich, v expensive and skiing aint that great as it is too low.
Lastly we did Bormio in Italy once via Milan ( and a few lads from Bergamo ) - its too long a transfer but I am told there is resorts closer to both but you'll find them lacking lift facilities and atmosphere - you'll really want them unless you are going 100% for the skiing.
I've been to a few other spots but they are not worth mentioning or too much hassle for 3 days.
There is also Poland and Slovinia which I know nothing about, sorry.

My suggestion is to find cheap flights on the dates you want to go. Find a resort close enough by, try find a cheap hotel. and off you go.
