Nitelink fares should be lowered to try get people back using the service because if less and less are using I can see it going very soon indeed

Aside from turning it into a regularly priced regularly running route (which won't happen) what's the need really?
A fiver to get home is dirt cheap, especially compared to your other options at that hour; taxi or walk.

The already reduced timetable and ridiculous expense of a night out in the CC is why they get used less, not the fare.

Nitelink should be replaced by 24 hour standard bus services on core routes.

This service would pick up people both inbound and outbound and prices would be the same as the normal daytime fares (or ok add an extra €1 if you must).

1 Main reason is if there are say 3 or 4 or 5 so on it would work out cheaper by taxi and get dropped to the door.

Also a lot think they have lots of trouble .

Have you ever noticed the heat is on in the bus and not cold it puts the passengers asleep:)

There may be some problems but tend to find more nuts out during the day

This would make so much sense.

as I said but DB have no interest in this and it seems the Nta have no interest in making them do it either.

To afraid of the reaction of taxi drivers if they did it.

Even simpler, make the Nite Fare the max cash €2.65,and offer a NiteOut two journey ticket for €5...your ordinary fare in and a Nite Journey home...Plus offer a discount for two travellin together.

The "Smart Card" has SO much to offer anybody who can see it;s many uses.....;)

    My proposal would be:

There are currently 18 Nitelink routes. Make these 24hr routes in both directions (Hourly frequency from 00:00 to 6:00). Run these from their normal stops rather than Nitelink stops.

Put these routes on the RTPI, so you can find out with the app when the next bus is.

Put ticket vending machines near the City Centre stops for these routes.

As was mentioned already, make the fare 2.65. But let taxsaver tickets and monthly tickets be used on these routes.

Something has to change. Currently if I get a taxi home with 2 other people, its cheaper than getting the Nitelink. (CC to Clontarf).

Which the much smaller city of Brighton manages to perfectly well (and exactly that - £1 surcharge, even on top of a season ticket, but no more).

I agree it's ridiculously expensive. The only time I would ever use it is if I'm alone which is rare when I'm in town at that time and I'm sure it's the same for most.

In Lyon they have a bus that leaves every hour until 4 am to a large university complex which costs the normal bus price. Dublin could easily get the numbers to do the same - even charge a premium for it just not a fiver. Would be very bad news for the taxi drivers but the world can't revolve around stagnant job preservation.

Bit of an off-topic question but does the Nitelink pick up passengers in places besides town? I remember hearing this and thought it was absolutely bizzare. Can anyone confirm? What's the logic there??

Frankly I can't see any of this happening.

I've more and more come to the conclusion that the powers that be (i.e. the state) have an unofficial policy to actively discourage late night activities (even covertly) due to our nation's love affair with alcohol.

Like it or not this country does have a problem with alcohol abuse, and I am inclined to believe (I could be completely wrong about this I accept) that our late night public transport services or lack of them is a subtle attempt by the state to disencourage late night revelry.

But surely the lack of late night transport encourages people to stay at home to drink, which is what the government say they want to stamp out (people drinking excessively with alcohol bought from off licences). I agree with you that change probably wont happen, but I feel its more to do with the fact we are broke, and public transport is always the last to get funding in Ireland.

Well being honest about it, adding late night public transport would be way down the list at the moment.

The companies are struggling to maintain existing services let alone introduce new ones that the state ain't prepared to pay for.

    You could be right.

But it's clear the Victorian drink laws and early end to public transport haven't helped with the problem of alcohol abuse.

Not gonna happen. Anyway, good luck with that!:D

    yes they do.

the 7n for example picks up outside the US embassy, Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire DART station. The logic being they stop at other large centres where people are likely to be out late to make more money. Fare is still the same.

Sorry re-reading my question made me realise I gave the wrong impression. I find it crazy that they don't pick up people everywhere just like daytime services.

Another disincentive to using the nitelinks is for example the crazy lengths of some of the routes. I only have one example, that being the 48n/44n. I can't remember what its called now, but the two routes were made into one and if you live in the ballinteer/rathfarnham area your journey home has become so much longer.

Afaik it's the 46n now. City centre to Dundrum via... Carrickmines?! No point really...

I made that mistake once when I moved to Dundrum, won't ever be making it again. It was dark when I left town and bright when I made it home!

It boils down to costs - the loads on the 48n were low.

Frankly I'd be prepared to put up with a longer journey than forking out €20-25 for a taxi.
