Aspirin Screening ?

Just watched a very interesting item on BBC newsnight about the many benefits of Aspirin.
A study published in The Lancet shows Aspirin can reduce the spread of certain cancers by 50% as well as reduced incidence of Colon , Lung and Oesaphageal (sp?) cancers - all this in addition to its known benefits in combatting heart disease.

The study has raised the question whether low dose aspirin should be taken by all people over 40 . Of course the issue of aspirin and stomach bleeding can never be separated but apparently there is now a test that can determine if a patient is likely to have this issue when taking aspirin - anyone here know anything about this test ? Is it available in Ireland ? Is it expensive ?

Briefly read something about this today. I think the test you are referring to is the standard H. pylori test. H. pylori is a bacterium that causes chronic stomach ulceration. The test is fairly simple (there are numerous ways of testing) and relatively cheap.

    Here's the wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H_pylori#Diagnosis

Our lecturers in college recommended anybody over 50 be put on aspirin. Irish company Solvotrin are trying to develop a type of aspirin that doesn't affect the stomach in such a bad way.
