Have booked flights to Majorca for a weekend and looking for somewhere to stay. We're a couple in the latter half of our twenties. It looks like we might be stuck between the party scene and the family scene in Majorca. Is there a happy medium with decent beaches, restaurants and bars?

Booked Cala D'Or as a backup. Will probably need a hire car now.

Majorca is a smashing spot, it has plenty to cater for everyone IMHO. The party strips are a tiny representation of the island, if you have rented a car then you can head for Mondrago National Park and see it's beaches/coastline.

And if you get bored (unlikely) sure Santa Ponsa and Shagaluf are always a last resort.

Yeah I liked Mallorca as well... I had never been on a "sun holiday" before and reluctantly went on my first one a couple of years ago to Mallorca. I would be more into adventure/doing stuff holidays...

Stayed in Santa Ponsa and I was getting seriously bored after a day or two of the beach, pool etc. Not a bad little town actually. It was nice, but needed something to do... so we hired a car and explored the island. Beautiful place...

Drove up to Soller and Port Soller one day via the west coast road. It was an absolutely stunning drive. Nice little villages and towns built into the side of the cliff/mountain with lovely winding roads (not for the faint hearted driver. Route was Santa Ponsa -> Andratx -> Banyalbufar -> Valdemossa (lovely little village) -> Dela -> Soller) (just took the motorway back)... I had been to Vietnam a few months previously and it reminded me a bit of that landscape up in the mountainous regions...

Another day we drove into Palma itself and it is a really nice city. Drove via Magaluf on the way. It was a right kip. KFC and vomit the place smelled of...

The best place though was a little beach called Cala Marcal, right beside Portocolom on the east side of the island. Just north of Cala D'or... Absolutely stunning. Perfectly fine sand, crystal blue water, perfect for swimming in and a lovely place with nice restaurants. It seemed to be mainly Germans that it catered for, but we are thinking of heading back there if we can for a short break..

The north of the island has great walking routes. Take the old train from Puerto de Soller to Soller. If you're exploring Palma, the cathedral has a rose window to rival Paris's Notre Dame
