Anyone ever get their 105 left shifter replaced by shimano out of warrenty?

Iv just got a new secondhand bike(2010) yesterday and the fecking left 105 shifter died on my first outing! Its stuck on the outer ring and wont shift back down.
Iv done the research and found out its a common fault with with the 105 at the time being a triple shifter and used as a double at the same. People dont realise this and like myself over shift on the outer ring and it jams up. When you try to shift back down it wont and as a results you break something in the lever.
Iv read that shimano replace's the broken shifter, but what am I to do being the second owner and out of warrenty? Surely this is a stupid thing to do by shimano using the old 105 in this way?
Iv got the the receipt and owners manual from the original buyer so I could go to the bike shop he bought it from too.

Did the person who sold you the bike know this problem was there? It seems very odd that a problem like that would just happen and completely seize on your first spin. I'd be looking for money from him....

if its out of warranty then you must argue that it is not "fit for purpose" under the Sale of Goods Act. As it is reasonable for a shifter to work for several years, you have a good case.
First port of call is usually the retailer, but as you bought second hand I am not sure how you stand. You should try them first anyway. If no joy there, contact Shimano or their distributor.

If you've no luck getting a replacement then this looks pretty decent value. It's 5600 for a double, which may or may not be compatible with what you have.

Yeah Iv just bought the lever off Merlin before I read this, thanks anyway bunnyhopper! Was a decent price too, some secondhand levers on the bay where dearer.
I think it was the better option in the end, it seemed like so much hassle. Was reading all I could a the subject last night.

Be warned though, the shimano 105 5600 lever seems like it very prone to this breakage.

P.s Iv just realised I bought a black lever in stead of the silver, ha! Ah well :)
