Don't mean to nit-pick, but you know those signs with the arrows above the lanes on motorways telling which lane you're supposed to be in...well do you find that the arrows are not directly above the centre of the designated lane but more in between the two and your not sure which lane to be in.

found that yesterday on the m50 going to the airport had to change lanes a few times as i wasn't sure which lane to be in

Well there's 3 lanes, and usually 3 arrows. It doesn't matter if they're directly in the middle of the lanes, you should be able to do the maths.

Err 2 lanes and 2 signs...left sign is for left lane, right sign is for right lane?

ya i know...but when your an "out of towner" and not used to motorways and also travelling at speed it does add to confusion

If that "adds to confusion" you shouldn't be on the road tbh.

Its funny that, a lot of M50 users only see two lanes, the middle and the "fast lane", and refuse to drive in the left lane. :D:D

3 lanes most places and signs are pretty clear so dont see any issue with them. Plenty of notice with them also.

that approach to the m50 turnoff is very confusing you keep left but there is a bus lane to your left, at one point there is a rise in the road, when you come over that you are immediately confronted by a further split in the lanes, it is very easy to miss the turn off for the m 50 north

That road is a disaster. I have been north on the 3 lane section a few days lately and have noticed on average that for every 2/3 cars in left lane, there are 4/6 cars in the middle lane, and at least 7/8 cars in the right hand lane, bumper to bumper doing 105 kph.:(

The M50 is a river of stupidity.

So act accordingly. Drive the road the way it's meant to be driven and let the Gardai police the middle lane hoggers.

So what makes you think I don't act accordingly?

How can I if the overtaking lanes are full of idiots with no concept of of lane discipline, spatial awareness or regard for other drivers?

Lol at 'gardai' & 'police' in same sentence..

BTW sorry OP this is off topic.

All three lanes travelling the same speed? I can't say I've seen that much tbh.

Why do you lol at Gardai and Police in the same sentence? I don't understand the joke.

Isn't there 5 lanes just at the end of the M50 at the M1 junction?

Yes I do understand wher you are coming from op

When you have never really drove on roads like that it can be a 'little confusing' alright 'If your from down the country'

I take it that was your first time driving to Dublin/Dublin Airport op ?

The more you drive to the airport and M50/ motorways in general the easier it gets :)

You posted a picture of motorway with two lanes only, and hard shoulder. Signage is as clear as it can be.

The more you drive, the more you understand anyway, no need to change the signs at this stage.

the picture is not the issue its just an example, as others have said there are up to 5 lanes on the m50 branching off to various locations

my beef is the arrows (on some signage) don't point down to the centre of the designated lane..they point down between two lanes which to me as someone who is not used to the m50 makes it confusing OK

Really? Seriously? Two lanes, two signs..... Is it really that difficult to comprehend which one is for which lane?

are you referring to something like this?

    N7/M50

It could be confusing at times but in the end you get there... most of the time is just a matter of common sense and and trying putting yourself into the shoes of person who designed those sings... expect the un expected normally works for me...

The picture you quoted has two lanes.

Also, If I am approaching five signs with five lanes, I'd say I could work out which sign is for which lane.... It's quite straightforward really.

I know - most of you do anyway - this part when you join m50 going from n7. There are signs on the road too, not a perfect planning, but most (all) drivers know the road, and the ones who don't know it have plenty of time to change lane.
    Part of driving i suppose...

There is traffic lights just before these signs so traffic is moving slowly enough to get into the right lane.

The only place where the signs ever confuse me are at the end of the Lucan Road just past Liffey Valley where the roads head off to the M50. There is an over head sign that shows the various lanes, but the road is not dead straight and there is a slight brow of a hill or something, so as you approach the signs you are not heading directly for the arrow that you should be pointing at and it only becomes clear at the last minute. Its nearly caught me out a couple of times.

Other than that I find those overhead signs are usually bang on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭bbuzz

That sign was taken down ages ago, AFAIK all overhead signs where there is a single sign for each running lane were taken down because they caused confusion (it was really bad on the N7 Naas road)

This is what the new sign looks like: https://maps.google.ie/?ll=53.261927,-6.192877&spn=0.003068,0.01929&hnear=12+Laurleen,+Stillorgan,+County+Dublin&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=53.261923,-6.192874&panoid=vp35hszbw3Fqk_thdieZnw&cbp=11,320.07,,0,0

we are not talking about the same place. i was talking about the m4 approach to the m50, another poster has described exactly what im talking about, it is really badly designed, past liffey valley approaching the turn off to the M 50 the overhead gantry bears no relationship to the lanes as you approach the turnoff, it only becomes accurate at the very point the lanes divide, no advance warning given......... as posted by,DJIMI...
