Iphone 3GS shutting off?

Hi, My brothers iphone 3GS sometimes shuts itself off when the battery is still at 33% or higher. In the past few days it has
been happening twice/three times a day. When he goes to turn it back on it displays the low battery symbol.
He recently had the phone factory unlocked through Itunes by Apple. The phone is around two years old. The question is: Is this something to do with the unlock? Or is the battery starting to go? Or is it something else entirely?
If it is the battery, does anyone know where I could get a cheap, reliable, replacement done? Thanks.

I had a similar problem last year.

No matter how long the phone was charged for, it would randomly turn itself off and say the battery was dead until I charged it again.

The music would skip, and the back case would get extremely hot too.

I found that by doing a full reset of the phone to factory settings sorted it out for me, just make sure to save contacts and anything important first.
