Asia Bibi still jailed and facing execution for blasphemy in Pakistan

You're probably aware of the case of Asia Bibi, the Christian mother who is jailed in Pakistan for blasphemy and who has been sentenced to execution by hanging.

Her conviction also led to the murder of two Pakistani politicians who publicly supported her: the Punjab governor and the Minorities Minister, who was the only Christian in the Government.

Asia is now three years in jail, and I have written an overview of her case along with contact details of groups who are campaigning for her release.

Religious intolerance affects both believers and non-believers, and I appreciate the head of Atheism Ireland posting the OP.

I was also glad to see that Christian Solidarity Worldwide, one of the major Christian agencies that highlights persecution around the world, has taken up the case of Alexander Alan, an atheist jailed in Indonesia.

Freedom of religion or belief is a universal human right for all people everywhere, and it includes the right not to believe. CSW

Let's also not forget Youcef Nadarkhani. This week marked his 1000th day in jail.

He is sentenced to death by hanging.

I long for the day where Islamic states offer the same basic human rights as the West does, although I suspect that is centuries away.

The most practical things you can do are:

• Give support to the organizations already campaigning on these issues.
• Email the authorities and/or embassies of the countries concerned.
• Email the Government, particular the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
• Contact your local TD or Senator and ask them to intervene.
