I don't have a clue about how the inner guts of android works, this may have a very simple explanation but I can't wrap my head around it at the moment.

While arsing around in Astro File manager I found two identical folders called "sdcard" in two separate locations: one is mnt/sdcard and the other is just /sdcard in the root folder with system info etc. Why do I have two of them?

    I'm a 3 day old Android n00b.

One is your internal memory which is a sd card soldered to your phone's circuit board and the other is the sd card that you can remove or replace.

Nope both folders are the sdcard. They are both showing the same contents because one is a symbolic link to the other. Don't worry about it.
