Repairing PC Monitor- Back light fault??

    Hi

Bought a 22'' LCD Monitor on adverts from this lad. Thing's been acting up since I got it. Needless to say yer man who sold it to me was pulling a bit of a fast one - not that I can prove that of course. Anyway the light started acting up a bit a day or two afterwards: there was a buzzing noise that came from the back of the monitor which reduced when the screen was at 100% brightness, and the odd time the screen would cut out. It only happened once or twice the first few days so I wasn't worried. It was a bit crap but it was second hand so whatever, you know.

It turns out the screen wasn't turning off but the light was cutting out. The screen is barely visible under light like a torch. This problem has gotten so bad that the screen won't stay on past one second, if even that. For a few days it took 5-10 attempts before the light would stay on, maddeningly annoying of course, but at least it worked in the end. Now it's not working at all.

This seems like a common problem. The stuff on the net sends my head into a spin, though. Could a novice like me learn how to fix it, if it is a common and straightforward problem? And if I took it to a shop how much would I likely have to pay to get it fixed?

I'm not well up on these things and don't want to get screwed!

    Jack

What screen is it? One of the old 4:3 grey/black Dell ones perhaps? Nothing's un-fixable, as long as you have the time and equipment.

The problem sounds like a problem I had with that model. Had to replace a power transistor. Not too big a job. Again only speculation till you give more details.

I started a thread with a similar problem a few days ago.

I was told that the problem was either the backlight or the inverter .

Whichever it is , the cheapest option is to throw the unit away and buy a new one .

Not worth repairing - have a look at you-tube videos of the repair procedure .

Could be caused by failing capacitors on the PSU board.
